Warning about domain transfers in with GoDaddy

Over the course of probably a couple of years I have had to extensively "fix" contact records for many dozens of domains that I had transferred into GoDaddy. The contacts were perfectly fine before transfer, but upon arrival at GoDaddy, the "Registrant" (and not necessarily Administrative) contact was completely messed up, often full of run-together text or otherwise fields left completely blank. Bad news! Also, often the Registrant email showed as "[email protected]".

So a word of advice, you may want to check the Whois records for any domains you have transferred in to GoDaddy over the recent past, or ever.

Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon?

Yes, I always fix the contacts after transfer too. Everyone should run one of the downloadable CSV reports from time to time to check all of the data. Not sure it is specific to Godaddy or just a mis-match between registrars with the data fields.

Same here. I transfer many domains to end users and the whois would normally update itself. Now I always have to take the extra step of letting end users know they need to manually update the whois. I remember that when requesting transfers to godaddy not so long ago, one could select either for "whois to update with new registrant info when transferred" or "retain current registrant info". Now I don't even see these options offered when requesting transfers.

i've sent lots over the past few weeks and all have gone through OK as far as i can see @werty there is an option for "use details from specified customers account" and that's what i use

I think you are referring to "account changes" and not "transfers". Correct?

explain the difference please as i've sent /transfer'd quite a few domain names as of late to lots of different people.

Thanks

Account change = user to user within the same registrar. AKA "push"
Transfer = moving domain from registrar to registrar (i.e. from Dynadot to GoDaddy)

This is a very valid point forge.
I've transferred some names from another registrar and have had the "[email protected]
put into the contact fields. This is particularly bad if you're expecting potential buyers to contact you; so I suggest you check after transfers to be on the safe side.
I think it might be information sent by the transferring out registrar; and not from Godaddy.

Regards

Ralph.

I would say it's godaddy the problem as it doesn't make sense that domains I've transferred from many different registrars get the same issue.

Same here. It is a long standing problem.

Now I check after every transfer in and without doubt, always, there is a problem with whois.

Have to manually fix, at least one or more of company/organization, email, phone#.

I can understand keeping the name-servers from old whois, but why use old registrant details or put their own email in the whois?

They should at least give an option to allow current accounts registrant details to be used in all types.

In settings, there is "Domain Registration Defaults" option but it is never applied to transfer-in whois but works properly for registration.

Long time ago, I contacted support and was told there is no problem. They pretty much told me -> you must have messed it up, and would you like us to fix it!!!

I was shocked at their response, now I find it easier to log in and fix the whois every time after that.

Remember to fix it ASAP after transfer, as, AFAIK, every edit of company name or your name, causes the 60 day lockin period to start.
