Version of whois that supports the new gTLDs?

It looks like the whois command on my mac only seems to understand .com/.net/.org TLDs, and chokes on the newer gTLDs. I prefer using a local whois command because then I can be certain nobody is front-running my domain searches (the low value of alt gTLDs notwithstanding).

I think some web services need time to update new gTLDs domains
You can check at registry whois
