Patent application shows that Verisign might be shaking up the current system.

Lots of well-timed firepower.

That’s how the expired domain name drop catching system works in .com today. Drop catchers target domain names the second they drop, and try to coordinate amongst their hundreds of owned-and-operated registrars as well as partners to register as many of the desirable domain names as possible.

But is .com registry Verisign getting ready to change how this works?

The explosion in the number of new registrars created solely for grabbing dropping domains was precipitated, at least in part, by some rate limiting actions by Verisign. Now there are signs that it will make further changes.

Wow.

Why is Verisign doing this ? I don't understand.

Maybe they don't like that DC / HD are owning a large (and growing !) % of the .COM registartions (should be around 2%)

The good news, it probably will be good for domain investors :)

Because there is already a visible monopoly, held by 2-3 huge players. There is almost no
market competition, monopolists put the prices they want knowing that users don't have other options.

VeriSign seems to have monopoly on .net and .org contract.

I'm speaking about drop-catching. Today, if you want a domain, you have to go, by example, to DC, just because they catch almost every good domain. And, if there are more backorders, participate in the auction and end up paying big big money to DC.
