invision does have a version that is free, (is somewhat hard to find it on their site, can just install if from cpanel) it is 'limited' ie no support ect

phpBB any day :) I've used it for many years and I have great experince with it. I feel most comfortable with it, I just can't wait until the release of phpBB 2.2.

I prefer IPB because it is free but vbulletin is better!

IPB isn't free anymore. you'll have to google for it or get one of the free providers such as invisionfree etc.

Invision was free and 1.3 is still free but 2.0 isn't :( PHPBB gets trashed by both but vB still takes the cake.

PHPbb IMO is for a small community not a huge site. I have used phpbb for a small site.

I would seriously prefer Vbulletin myself anyday.

I have used it, and it has much better controls for the administration, better features for the user, and it's very clean cut.

The support on the site is awesome, you barely have to wait an hour or two in most cases, for even the most complex of questions.

Like i said Vbulliten is probally the best feature wise, and PHPbb is good for a small site, but it does have alot of hacks.

As far a super huge site that has as much traffic as 10,000+ hits daily your going to need something that runs with a better databasing system that mysql. Im actually going to undergo and make a script like vbulliten but run ADODB for use on multiple database systems.

Invision. Once I tried to join a VBulli----whatever the crap it is and it wanted me to download it to my desktop. I did so. And the only thing it did was give my unreliable service and all kindsa other junk. They even promised the day I activated it that they would join and send me 50 dollars threw the mail. And guess what? They didn't send. VBulletin is crap according to me.

According to me vbulletin is the best out there.
They might had some problems just mail them back and tell them.

Because i've never had any problems with VB.
:D

I would put Invision at the top - there's loads of people who use it, which means getting support is easier (not from IPB, but from people on their forums). Also, their standard skin is *much* nicer. It's very... chic =P I would say vB is next. PhpBB's skins to me look awful. I don't think it's written well, but if you can't buy IPB or vB, don't worry about using phpBB. There are some skins out there you can get, and phpbb.com has the mods you can use for shops and stuff right there (which IPB doesn't have. not sure about vB) instead of going to an unsponsored site =)

alright. There is some people that hated it when IPB when paid. Here is a link to almost an exact clone to free IPB! (Reprogrammed, coded almost the same way)

iceBB! http://icebb.kenkarpg.info/

If you cant afford vb use icebb

if you can afford vb, vb is the best.

I just upgraded AcornDomains from PHPBB to VB.

I did a test run on another domain just get familiar with the VB interface but it was quite easy and pulled through all the membership info, forums and threads (much to my relief!)

The only thing I lost was everyone's Private Messages but no one has been too bothered by that.

So I would say once you have a decent membership level (I just went over 200 members) then VB is worth the investment.

Now all I need is a free chat room mod for VB, suggestions anyone?

Well i think mybb will be a big contender once gold is released.

Invision is developing faster the vb right now, phpbb development is slow and old...phpbb is the old hag of forum software!
