In my opinion, I would rank the software:

vBulletin - The best software, but I don't like the price tag
phpBB - Open source, tons of mods, and free
IPB - I can't stand it

I think vBulletin is definitely better than IPB. I also think phpBB is better, because it is open source, which allows for people to create a lot more mods, and it also is free. I would never pay for IPB, because I think its awful. Its a vBulletin wannabe, but still lacks major features.

I totally disagree with you - its easy for people to create mods (not encrypted so people can just view sourcecode like that!!)

PHPbb is bad - bad admin panel and isn't advanced at all.

I think vBulletin is ok, but Invision is good too ;)

Invision has features that vbulletin doesn't have - but then, vbulletin also has featurea that IPB doesn't have.

For the "cheap" people, here's a good solution: www.jaia-interactive.com

Try MyTopix!! Much better then phpBB ;)

MyTopix isn't bad theres a lot of contenders out there not well known which are all free and can kick phpbb's ass.

I haven't used vBulletin. But IPB code is not that easy to follow and it looks blotted. I heard that vBulletin code is very easy. I would also consider looking into respective APIs before jumping to a conclusion. I'd strongly prefer something like punBB or miniBB over phpBB for small scale websites. phpBB is the most insecure piece of code out there. They release a new version almost every week becase of newly discovered SQL Injection or XSS vulnrability.

Thanks,
Pratik
