Well this site is vbulletin. So navigate around it, then go to an Invision site and navigate around it. Kinda like a test drive of a car. Then do a search. This question has now been asked 643,142 times.

My advice is use free forum software untill your membership/volume requires you to go to VB. Very easy to import your invision db to vbulletin at a later time.

Vbulletin is of course better than Invision...No doubt in that

"Better" is subjective. vBulletin is a big ape. Maybe you only need phpBB. Were I you? I'd go with phpBB until I saw the need to expand. What kind of site is it btw? That certainly helps to know.

It's a matter of taste really. vBulletin wins my vote, but phpBB and IPB are fine software too.

For Paid software I'd go with VB. Invision is great and all but they charge too much for what they provided for free.

Can you transfer a phpbb forum into a vbulletin forum without losing the members and the posts?

I believe so.

Re

moe8585,

Yes, you can. I did that last month with one of my sites (from phpbb to vbulletin). Was fairly easy .. if you need help PM me and I'll help you however I can.

As for what is better, phpbb is a great (free) forum script to start with if your forum only has a few members.. Vbulletin is my favorite, but only because most of my forums end up being quite large and I use the extra features that Vbulletin offers, but it is a large and feature-laden admin panel, so might be a bit of a shock to those upgrading from phpbb.. heh

Overall, Invision board works well too.. they all do (except UBB.. ugh), it just depends on your taste. I think Vbulletin (even by default skin) looks more professional and "feels" nicer to navigate through than any other, but once again, it's all about preference and what options you feel you need.

My vote would have to go to Vb, great support and great community both on the .com and .org (for mods/hacks). Invison and phpbb both get the job done, but do lack a lot in the addon's hacks area as well as general support.

Brian

Neigher of them are really worth the cost. I'd go with phpBB. Yes Invision and VB are better but not so much as justifing the massive amounts you would have to pay to get just 1 stupid license.

But if you really want a paid one (Which is only very slightly better then phpBB), go with VB.

I would download the free version of Invision PB and then start there. You will have most of the same features as in VB just without the cost. You can either download v1.3 or RC2 which were the last two versions before IPB starting charging for their software. I have both, but I know if you do a quick search online it should be an easy find. Then as most mentioned it will be an easy to import the db to VB later

on one more note, if you write your own modifications for the software, you will find phpbb's code to be somewhat sloppy, and vb's is for the most part very clean

i suggest v1.3 if you go for free, it has a lot of skins and hacks.
