I am running a new forum in PHPbb and I really find difficult working with mods... I haven't encounter any problem with VBscript before...

I am about to give-up using phpbb.. :(

I have used phpBB numerous times and would have to day, stick with vBulletin. I have never used VBulletin before but I will say phpBB is a pain in the butt. You have to hack the source for every mod there is, it's really hard to get a good forum setup and be able to block all the spam at the same time.

phpBB is asking for lots of spam :(

phpBB is asking for lots of trouble. Remember that one guy that hacked phpbb.com a couple months ago and threatened everyone's forums?

Anyway, MyBB - Free PHP and MySQL Forum Software is certainly a better and free solution.

vb is the way to go, although if you aren't ready to put in the $$ or your budget is low start with phpbb and later on migrate to vb?

It may be messy after you migrate but its a good option to take :)

vb all the way!

vB is actually a mess too. I don't recommend it. Ever wonder why they're re-writing it all from scratch? It's because the current system is crud. You want something a little more shiny and new, with a LOT LESS overhead and resource usage (*cough* MyBB *cough*)

MyBB looks alot like VB and I think would see as the new VB. However people now have become narrow minded when it comes to forum software just as you see every popular forum now a days uses VB why differ :)

vB is not a mess, it is the best forum software available. You get what you pay for. They are handling vB4 differently because PHP 4 is no longer developed, so they are moving on to be PHP 5 only using OOP & MVC.

silver have you ever tried SMF ? It's free and has lots of Mods including Portals

Easy to use ..mods load with one click on the default template..if you use a different template you may or may not need to open up a file and make manual changes.... but the changes are all documented and pretty straightforward

I think vb is most familiar than other cms like phpbb

I personally can't stand vB (it's extremely bloat-ware), plus they charge for it.

I'd go with SMF - it's open source too, meaning there's no problems modding it as you'd like.

Again, you get what you pay for. BTW, you can mod vB too.

Eric SMF will do everything Vb does ..sometimes you get MORE than what you pay for

I know you're a little biased toward vBulletin, but consider that know matter how hard vBulletin tries, they're behind the times. Other free software such as MyBB are mostly non-proprietary and highly object-oriented with good overall design with PHP 5 and MySQLi. vBulletin is rather bulky, you must admit, and the company obviously can't keep up with the slow pace of PHP updates.

In addition, you can mod any other forum software too. From my experience MyBB is much easier to mod and a lot more elegant, design-wise, than vBulletin is.

the same thing? hardly. No point arguing though - I'm as much for open source as the next guy, but I do prefer vBulletin - it's been good to me. :)

I have VB up and running now... no problem with mods.. very user friendly, clean codes, etc..

vB all the way...phpbb is nice but...working with it is rather hard.

Having used all of the above systems, we use IPB (Invision Power Board) a fair bit. IPB 3.0 is impressive (currently in Release Candidate)...

MyBB and SMF are solid free contenders though.
