Has anyone noticed people using .mobi for normal non-mobi websites?

I was thinking it might be useful in the cell phone store niche.

Of course too much of this would really mess up the proper use of mobi as users could no longer depend on it to indicate a mobile site.

there are many people doing this
if you google just for dot mobi sites you will see hundreds, even thousands of them

dot mobi is for mobile use but when developing many people do whatever they want; you can have a dot mobi site working as "a normal non-mobi site" when you are using a laptop/desktop and a friendly mobile site when using cellphones (it is possible)

we have ready.mobi to see how mobile friendly is your site but it seems people just want to have another site built

stupid ppl

correct me if i am wrong (someone always does (usually my wife) )
but as i recall mobi has some strict dev criteria and they can actually "recall" your domain if you violate those terms...

i think people are just being stupid if they build it just for the "dot.com" criteria when as mentioned above you can build a smart site that displays device appropriate content....

it occurred to me they may have a dev requirment, really they should.
either way id build something in when i dev my mobi sites.

i dont think it's stupidity on the part of all the developers though, i think its lack of common knowledge which has to be partly the blame of the .mobi admins combined with the end users lack of desire to dev for the mobi market in the first place. they probably just wanted the domain for their website.
