Using Blogger for domain/minisite hosting

I was checking out twitter earlier and noticed that they hosted their blog on Blogger.

It looked pretty good. I haven't tried using blogger for many years now. I didn't even know they did domain hosting. Are there any reasons not to host a few dozen domain names like this?

you are better off getting your own hosting account where you can host unlimited domains, rather than using Blogger and install WordPress for them. That way you have a lot more control over your blogs and a lot more flexibility.

Blogger is fine - you can get your own domain name for $7 and use that - there are no hosting charges. Some people say Wordpress is better for all the widgets etc.... and for SEO but I remain to be convinced. I hated Wordpress when I used it - blogger is pretty straightforward and not so pretty but for a free service it's fine. Try it and see. You just need to configure your domain name with your registrar to point to blogger. The sites in my sig are all blogger blogs - some use my own domain name some don't.

The last time I checked them, the blog remains their property, not yours. That is, they don't allow you to export all your content (including comments) with you if you later decide to migrate.

With small minisites that you plan to resell, blogger is good. Less headache. But with blogs that you have long term plans for expanding later with more features, then better start with wordpress and host yourself.

1) Twitter is not trying to monetize its blog. It is simply a way to inform people of changes on Twitter (their money maker)

2) You have limited control over the domain. If you would like to sell in the future it would be hard to do

3) If G decides to take your blog down you could lose everything

Then again, if you play by the rules you can have a good blog up and running in no time.
