URL/LINK boggle (It has played my mind all day)

ok, i was reading a web forum about a post about terrorism on the internet. i came across a strange website with links to speeches off of the tv or something, i was too interested in the link of the website. the link was http://1116987574/radio/Bayan.htm and it worked. i noticed the domain had not one single . (dot) in it and it still loaded, i thought maybe it was a spoof or a trick, i typed the url into yahoo and http://uk.search.yahoo.com/search?f...&p=http://1116987574/radio/Bayan.htm&meta=vc=

that is the result:

66.147.224.182/radio/Bayan.htm


can someone explain how they did the url like http://1116987574/ instead of 66.147.224.182!

im not sure how it's done.. but it is a page on www.islahi.net

no clues in the source either.. interesting.

so how does this actually work? i mean if i remove the .php file i uploaded, that url still works right? what actually generates the url? i mean is it doen through apache or is it done via a script or is there a script that is required to make this do it without using apache?

The scripts posted here just give you an easy way to make the Long IP.
Long IP's are a DNS thing. I do not suggest you change all your links to your site over to it because I am not sure how Google and the others treat them.

BTW its the IP being changed NOT the domain.
