Hello,

I have recently bought privately domain. We both (buyer and seller) have Godaddy.com account and he transferred to my account and I locked the domain and saw the whois is changed to my name and contact detail and after I was satisfied I sent him the payment through Paypal.com

Can he take the domain back to his Godaddy.com account by asking Godaddy.com that I have done fraud or something like that in order to get the domain back? Although we have done the transaction very nicely without any problem but just to satisfy myself I am asking this question.

Hope to hear very soon.

Thanks and best regards

You should be fine, the usual problem with this type of transaction is when the buyer does a chargeback on paypal after the name transfer has gone through and keeps the money and the domain.

@ Timewarp

Thanks a lot for your comment on this as I am quite satisfied now. I was the buyer and I have made the payment sincerely. First I got the domain under my account and later I sent the money to his Paypal account and I am not going to claim back as far as you said there is no problem once it is under my account and locked.

Once again thank you very much mate :)

You should be fine. He can't do anything to get the domain back.

Im sorry, but I believe you are getting bad advise. Godaddy sends an email to the owner of a push for this very reason. Had the account been stolen and the domain name pushed, Godaddy could review and if the push was fraudulent, can return the domain name to the original owner.

Will this happen? Probably not. But assuming it cant happen is a mistake. Hopefully you did business with someone you feel you can trust and did your due diligence by looking into the domain name thoroughly before you bought it.

However, you probably wouldnt be asking this question if you had.

Hello Spade,

The seller actually was nice and he did transferred domain from his Godaddy account to my Godaddy account and after I have received the domain and locked it. I sent him payment to his Paypal account. It's been 1 day since that time and I have no problem with it but I have done domain buying for the first time in this way.

I never knew that person before contacting in purpose of buying the domain and have talked to him couple of times regarding domain transfer through phone and he seems quite nice person. Also I knew that the domain wasn't stolen and bought from the real owner. But only the scary thing was if he feels to get domain back and keep my money too :D

But in this way I can show to Godaddy our email conversations and Paypal payment detail.

What if I transfer that domain to some other registrar? Will it be more safe?

A transfer out of Godaddy to another registrar can sometimes be helpful, not always a guarantee. If you contacted the owner of the domain name, and not likewise, your probably safe. The issue here is primarily with account hacks and fraud.

For instance, if my account were hacked by say someone in Iran and a domain name pushed. I would contact godaddy and they could see that my account was accessed from an IP address that would appear to be incorrect, thus supporting a fraudulent transfer.

In this case, it would likely be godaddy siding with me and not the person who bought the domain name.

In regards to transferring, you will be unable to do so for at least 60 days. When you do a push from account to account, you must first agree the domain will be locked for 60 days, this helps prevent theft and fraud.

@ Spade

Thanks a lot for your detailed information and kind reply :)

I understand now and hopefully the seller won't be anything bad as he was the nice doing transaction and he trusted me too while transferring the domain first and later I pushed the money. And before making purchase I made myself sure that he was the real owner of that domain :)

I am sure you'll be fine. However, you should always understand the risks of your transactions before you proceed with them. This lesson is one which every business person at some point learns the hardway or the smartway.

good luck with your new domain name.

I can't see Godaddy reversing the push since you have proof of payment via PayPal. IMO.

Even if the account was hacked and the domain pushed fraudulently?

@ MicroGuy

Thanks a lot :)

Yeah, I do have proof that I have made payment to his Paypal account. I also have chat log in which we have discussed in detail about the buying/selling of the domain and everything is mentioned in the chat log including the domain name, price, his Paypal ID, etc.

I wasn't worried that the domain is stolen or not but only if he can take back in any case...

Thanks every one for their inputs and help. I really appreciate it :)
