I realize it could be expensive and/or tedious but do you think you'd ever upgrade your version of vBulletin to the latest? I like their Ajax coding when you post replies and editing posts and stuff.

I think we/he should really wait for a better version of VB to be released, at 3.5, in my opinion, doesn't offer much more than the current default installation.
It's a lot of work when you have custom hacks for any upgrades. I've had that problem myself. I had to stall upgrades several times due to hacks and a lot of times, I've just done some patches rather than full-blown upgrades.
