Using Overture

I know that one of the ways of evaluating a domain name's value is by checking it's words in Overture's Keyword Selector Tool, right? What kind of guidelines are there about evaluating this?

For instance, Say the phrase "bite me" appeared in search results 3254 times last month, would it be good to get biteme.com? What if it were a longer phrase but still appeared in search results as much?

How do you guys that are experienced use this tool?

The best way to use the tool is if you get a domain name that has overture with extension, such as if you put in biteme.com and it shows overture, than that is a good indication that the name will receive some traffic. The more overture with extension, the better your odds of getting a great name.

When just using overture for non extension names such as "bite me" it becomes a lot trickier, because although the phrase might be searched a lot in the search engines, theres a good chance that no one actually types that into the browser. The more words, the less of a chance that someone will type it in (this is a generalization, there are exceptions).

If you see some nice combinations such as bite me, which shows overture for the terms "bite me" and it's short and a popular phrase, you should risk the $8 bucks and register it.

When the Overture search suggestion tool reports 3254 searches it is indicating that there were that many searches performed for that keyword phrase during the month.
That is only one indication that biteme.com might be a smart purchase.

A quick search for "bite me" on Google indicates that there is a movie called bite me, a band called bite me, at least one song with that name, an album called bite me, bite me magazine, a book about Buffy the vampire slayer called with that name, and almost 1.5 million other references to "bite me" on the web. There are lots of potential buyers for the name.

Of course "bite me" is a popular slang term, biteme.com is kinda catchy, short and memorable.

I'd say grab that name - except of course for the fact that someone else already has.

I like http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/?keywords which also shows WordTracker stats along side Overture searches.

I use Google and Yahoo to search for potential uses of the name.

For keyword based names I occasionally use the Keyword Difficulty Tool at http://www.socengine.com/seo/tools.php

The Whois.sc Domain Explorer at http://www.whois.sc/domain-explorer/ comes in handy sometimes.

That just about sums up all the tools you need to decide whether to reg a name or not.

Thanks for those other tools. I see now that Overture and these others are good for keyword based judgements, not brandability, which can be very subjective.
