.UK domains

No matter what domain I tried to register,It gets added to my cart and then this is what I get

The registry has reserved these.ukdomains for anyone who registered the matching .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, .ltd.uk, .plc.uk domains before June 10, 2014. Those registrants have until June 10, 2019 to claim their.uk domain

Which is in a way saying that someone who ownes the .co.uk etc only get the chance to register those specific .uk domains till 2019!.

Well I found lots of premium names that are still available in the .uk. Unfortunately N-C took my money and haven't register the domains. .

i was about to reg a .uk name not having the .co.uk equivalent and not being a uk native nor resident. your post saved me. thanks a lot!

ccTLDs are quite popular in most European countries if you only trade business locally/regionally.

I read recently that 60% of UK businesses would prefer to have a co.uk domain over a dot-com. If you trade locally in the UK they seem to be very acceptable. Many large companies in England use the domain. It is certainly a 'country' thing - take com.au the Australian version - some of these domains sell for mega cash.

Personally I think dot-uk will take over from co.uk although it will take some years. Mexico is going the same way with the introduction of dot-mx instead of the countries older com.mx

Yeah, a lot of places over here in the UK use either .co.uk or .org.uk, the company I'm at using .org.uk.

Haven't seen many .UK companies yet though.

The .co.uk subdomain had approximately 10 million registrations before .uk was introduced. People in the UK have been using .co.uk for a long time.

I've never seen any .uk sites advertised for companies or businesses while out and about. .co.uk is embedded in people's minds here now and I think the .uks will just be used for redirections. There is still a lot of money in LLL.co.uk names even if they don't come with the .uk rights. While it's true nominet have probably made a lot of money from the release of .uk I think the same is also true for some of the .co.uk owners who can now register the .uk and sell it for a profit while still keeping the original which is currently the most valuable.

Exactly. Because in 99/100 cases the .co.uk gets priority of the .UK, the company I work for (using .org.uk) can't get it. .co.uk hasn't registered it, and won't respond to my contact about registering it and selling to us. We just want to use it for a URL shortener on social media and we are an IT company! Nightmare.

Yeah it's a difficult situation. I think that in a lot of cases the .co.uk registrant isn't aware that .uk is available. I mean there must be a lot of small businesses who have their website up and running and maybe don't even concern themselves with web matters or outsource it others, and there have to be a lot of registered names that were forgotten about or have been part of failed ventures, whether domain investments or real world business ventures, and now are non-contactable (if that's a word), as you have found out. These domains drop every day like money falling from the sky. These forgotten domains and uniformed registrants are the reason I believe that on that day in October 2019 it'll be like Christmas for the people at the ready to register the best .uk names.

If you own the .co.uk and have no immediate need for the .uk but do intend to make a defensive registration you may choose to wait until 2019 to do it. Why waste money registering it in advance?

Because you could sell it. Say you own cars.co.uk and you haven't developed it, cars.uk will have a value and even if you sell it to an end user and they develop the name, they're not competition to you as the .co.uk owner if you haven't developed the name. If anything, them marketing the .uk version would almost certainly drive up natural traffic to your .co.uk , such is the total domination of the longer extension. Of course this doesn't stand to reason if you have an active website and don't want the direct competition. Then you'd definatly keep it unregistered until you had no choice.

New Zealand just went through the same process of releasing 2nd level domain registrations but domain holders only had 6 months to claim their .nz domains.
Needless to say, many unclaimed .nz domains were snapped right away
I hope the registrants won't regret their procrastinating 5 years down the road.

No, you must have a UK address as Nominet has to verify it.

Ok, one more question to all Nps skilled in .uk and co.uk market. If you are selling .co.uk domain and .uk is freely available do you buy it and offer it as package? Wouldn't you be afraid that other side would register .uk and skip your domain?

The person who owns the .co.uk has the rights to the .UK - you can only register the .UK if you already own the .co.uk.

But isn't this rule true only for domains registered before certain date?

I found this description

Registrations for .UK domain names work under a process known as Grandfathering. This means that if a domain name with a .CO.UK, or similar, extension has already been taken, then the equivalent .UK domain name can only be registered by the person that owns the original, but only if the domain name was registered before the 28th October 2013.
