No matter what domain I tried to register,It gets added to my cart and then this is what I get

The registry has reserved these.ukdomains for anyone who registered the matching .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, .ltd.uk, .plc.uk domains before June 10, 2014. Those registrants have until June 10, 2019 to claim their.uk domain

Which is in a way saying that someone who ownes the .co.uk etc only get the chance to register those specific .uk domains till 2019!.

What is an UK Individual according to Nominet? Does that include a British Passport holder (living outside UK) or somebody living in the UK (any nationality). Can you opt out of the whois, like .co.uk? I don't see any option for that in the registration of a .UK domain.

As far as I'm aware, it's not always the .co.uk that has the right to the .uk, it's whichever uk extension was registered first. Nominet have all the information on their website and have a tool on their that can tell you who has the right. Realistically most of the .co.uk domains were registered first other than in industries like the charity sector (who generally use .org.uk) .

It's not a new gTLD, Nominet are just taking advantage of the change in the domain space to launch a more brandable ccTLD, and making a lot more money in the process. With over 10 million reserved .uk domains, it's even less likely you'll hand reg a good one than in one of donut's offerings.

@stub - a UK individual just needs a UK address. They used to send a paper certificate to your house with a form to send back! As far as I can tell they don't do any checks now - I've not been asked for anything but then I do have a UK address. I'm not even sure if they require a UK address any more but I'm sure you can find out that on their site. As for your other question, only non profit individuals can opt out of the Whois (you get a control panel for things like this and transferring ownership - it's a great system) so even if you park the domain you shouldn't have privacy on. They don't have a robust system on checking if you are a business, but I have had my Whois made public on a .co.uk after they contacted me to let me know that the were aware it was parked.

One final thing anyone wanting to grab a .uk as a fresh hand reg should know; with most good domains gone (as with any well established tld) you might be forced to the lower end of the market, which don't forget is far less valuable than the equivalent .com. Nominet charges £12/$20 to transfer a domain to a new owner and this really puts off people buying domains that might be worth say $500 in the .com of the same name as it might only be worth 2 or 3 times the fee.

Well I found lots of premium names that are still available in the .uk. Unfortunately N-C took my money and haven't register the domains. .

They should have given you a refund straight away.

@The_General I miss getting the certificates of registration for uk domains. I don't ever recall there being a form to send back however.

As for whois opt out, be aware that any advertising, affiliate or similar activities will get your address made public. So any adsense, amazon or strong recommendations/solicitation to any business is seen as "commercial". You don't need 3 adverts per page or have an amazon API shop to fall foul of this rule - if you have a blog and write a review on a product (for example) including an affiliate link is likely to be deemed commercial. So would any "proudly hosted by..." affiliate links. This said, nominet wont remove your opt out until someone complaints strongly about it.

As far as I know, there is not restrictions (i.e. nationality, country of residence etc.) on who can get a .co.uk, .org.uk or .uk but require a UK service address.

It seems they secretly amended the opt-out rules to make it harder:

They certainly did not advise registrants of this. The rules used to say explicitly that ads on a registrar's page that did not benefit you were ok - so if you registered a domain and just left it on that registrar's default page you would not get penalised for that.

Andrew Norton, who blogs about politics and statistics on his website at ktetch.co.uk, fell foul of this new policy in May. Nominet raised its concerns with Norton about the content of his site - he includes the email discussion on his site - and shortly afterwards revealed his home address in the public WHOIS search while the matter was still being investigated.

@carob I don't understand what the moaning is about... this rule has been around for years... I recall arguing with someone from nominet about being treated as a trading individual when I indeed was not, the rule looks pretty much identical. For nominet... an individual is a human who pays 100% of the costs for their web 1.0 website. I have heard cases where independent "part-time hobby" Open Source developers accepting paypal donations were also caught by this rule (okay they are directly accepting money but its still not a business). https://web.archive.org/web/20050306012006/http://www.nominet.org.uk/RegistrantOpt-out.html I selected a random date... it might have been like that from the very start.

nominet's attitude is disgraceful in the sense they simply think they can opt-out your details if you are in the right after removing that protection and be fine, despite at least 50 services pretty much store every whois and DNS/nameserver change... (or at least try to) so previous records would still display your home address. Add on top of that at least 1000 spam sites checking your website's seo values including whois info on page - they don't get updated.

I think penalising people for holding pages that they don't financially benefit from themselves is plain silly.

This said I still think its a case of being reported rather than nominet checking themselves.

I own .CO.UK names registered through GoDaddy. My primary rights on .UK are approved, but when I initiate registration process on GD, it says my domains are reserved by registry and I have to claim them.

Do you know what to do next?

Also interesting they chose the term uav, not drone - more of an industry thing. It's a nice short memorable domain, pity they are using Wix for the site.
