Typo Domains

I have recently registered a few typos of some major web sites. Avoiding the TM issues I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with this kind of domains. So far they get some traffic but I doubt their revenue will reach the reg fee at the end of the year.

I tried that once and it never really worked. It's hard to find one that isn't a trademark and that gets a lot of traffic. Good luck with it though!

I used a few of them before, really only get about 20-30 uniques a day from the typo. Seeing how I just ran a search engine script, it really didn't earn me much more than .50 a day. And how can you advertise a typo site?

20-30 uniques a day is enough for a good mid $xx IMHO. And .50 a day for a year is $182.50! Seems a good profit to me for just letting it sit on. And for advertising if it's a typo then technically its a different name isnt it? Guess it would depend on how much the spelling changed.

I agree with TGN, .50 a day is a nice revenue for a typo. I recently bought a typo of a domain with more than 1 million owe! It only get 2 or 3 visits a day and no revenue so far. :(

About the advertasing, what would you like to advertise your domain for? to get miss-spells in the search engines?

Overture is a big PPC (Pay Per Click) company that belongs to Yahoo. Its Search Term Suggestion Tool shows what searches are more popular. A search with extension is when you type in your search engine the domain plus the .com or any other extension (domain.com). Click in the link and try it out. :kickass:

Yes, I know of many people who make a very good living monetizing traffic from typos of trademarks. Bottom line is any domain that receives traffic will have value.

I take it you're trying to get traffic from people mistyping drugs.com? IMO, drufs.com is too obvious a typo. I think misspelled words with two letters switched around are less obvious. I hope you'll do well, though. Good luck!

I have some trademark typos and been dodging them for a while. I have a way that keeps them off my back. But I think they are just trying to scare me. Here is my secret.

1, do a private registration, but that only works for so long.

2, transfer the name to a cousin or distant relative, and also change the parking provider. I told the attorneys that I sold a bunch of domains in bulk, and they would have been smart they would have purchased the name from me for $800, rather than try to take it from me.

Might have to change registrants, and even registers for a while before you can move it back to the original parking.

3, If they really want it there is nothing you can do cause they will go to WIPO, but buy doing the above you can hold on to the typos for a while.... I have held on to some very high traffic and high revenue Trademark domains.
Would love to tell you the domains that I have but I can say they are very good typos for the largest bank in America

*whistles* Risky move. Timing is everything if using that option.

Do you do that before receiving a C&D letter or after? Oh, and nice tips you
just shared, too, however risky they potentially are. :)

Seems to me as it isn't much worth it if you have to go through all of that.

Really interesting thread. Staying one step ahead of the law / companies does seem like a lot of work.

In my experiences, most companies / attorneys just want to scare you. They dont want to pay large amounts to get a domain from WIPO. But if I have a domain that is making really good on PPC and is a Trademark, I always do a private registration. But sometimes I get contacted by the attorneys before i see how good the domains are doing and can justify doing a private registration.

I had some domains that were trademarks of a big travel agency and did not have a private registration. I had these domains parked at SEDO. First I got an email from the attorney and just did not respond. Then I got a certified letter. The day I got the certified letter I transfered the domains to a third party. I waited for the name servers to reslove and then moved the parking to Domain Sponsor (under my account). I emailed the attorney saying I do not own the domain anymore and sold the domains in bulk. The third party (who is a friend) never got contacted by the attorneys, but after a few months, he transfered the names back to me(in a differnt domain register)and I did a private registration. I never heard from them again (over a year has passed).

Just recently I was contacted by the Expedia attorneys (Not the same travel comp in the previous comment) and they saw i registered the domain ExpedRia.com and had it parked at SEDO. I was contacted within 2 months of registering this domain. I was only making about $1 per month on PPC and it was not worth doing a private registration. So I just gave them back the domain. Months have passed and would you believe it they still left it parked at SEDO. I am still getting the PPC on it.. What a bunch of idiots. Just goes to show when you get so big how much slips thru the cracks.
