What determines the value of a good typo domain? Is it simply the traffic generated from the typo's? If so, is there any way to gauge what type of traffic a typo domain might receive?

I have a poker domain in mind, so the market it serves is massive.

This would be my first typo domain, so any help is appreciated.

If you made the mistake and the site is big, buy it. :)

Hi - Check it in overture http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ to see if it has a good result with extension.

Here is an example - Verginmobile.com has an overture result of
115 WITH EXTENSION (you must also include the extension)

The higher the overture/with ext result is - the more traffic you are likely to get - as long as you can convert that traffic by having related PPC links then you make money :) BUT - As far as I am aware there is still a TM issue with typos, that does'nt seem to stop alot of people though ?? Best to go with generic - Non TM names if you can get them.

The value of a typo would usually be derived from how much it makes in PPC per month.

ovt is one way to have a better idea if your typo domain may be successful, alexa ranking of the real site is another. Overall, getting successful typos is somewhat of a crap shoot.

It is a generic broad name. The .com typo version only gets 30 type in's per month. This is the .us version.

So don't bother? I can't imagine it has any traffic naturally.

I would say not if the "real" one only gets 30 type ins - You really need massive, busy sites IMO to make them work.

Typo rules 101:

For typos to work I have discovered that they should meet at least 3 points.

1) target site must be BIG. 5k alexa or better

2) target site a .com AND your typo also a .com

3) your typo must be somewhat common. You can google versions of spelling to see how often that new spelling is featured. (be aware that your misspelling might be a name for an obsucure band or person etc so dont trust the google result too much)

Note:

The alexa can be be higher if the typo is better (more common)

go to sedo and search correct domain name

if the missing dot wwwdomainname.com is taken then you might be onto something.

Never mind - If you do get a few clicks in the year it might pay for itself ?? :) Submit it to loads of search engines to help increase your chances.

I disagree that the typo has to be a .com. I guess it depends on what you call a typo, but I have a couple .orgs that get very nice traffic because people accidentally type in the .org extension rather than the .edu and .com extensions.
