Hyphens Generally Not As Good

Hi,

I asked myself that same question when starting out. It's usually best to avoid hyphens unless it's a really good name and has been taken in many extensions without dashes. Even better if the dot com with dashes you are then thinking of buying is taken in other extensions.

For example, I searched for 'treeofknowledge' only to find it taken in all the best extensions. When I tried 'tree-of-knowledge' it had gone in dot net, dot org and dot uk BUT THE DOT COM WAS AVAILABLE!

I then typed in 'treeofknowledge.com' into my browser and realised the owner would probably never sell. If anyone wants tree of knowledge, they are going to have to buy my name!

I grabbed that and am enjoying some parking revenue and will keep a hold of it unless I get a good offer. These are the best names with hyphens to go for.

Hope this has helped.

Matt.

Hypens are GREAT if the word is NORMALLY hyphenated.

For instance... Jack-O-Latern

That is a word you would never type WITHOUT the hypen. In that case, the hypen is appropriate.

Using hyphens where they DON'T belong is a sure fire way to waste money.

I have heard though, that search engines don't recognize the hyphen so type-in (see that hyphen? ;) ) traffic would be unaffected. I have also heard that hyphens are quite common in European type-ins.

Short answer: where appropriate, good buy.

Best of Luck,

GoPC
