Two words spacing for search

Hi,

Just getting into domains. Have some ideas, however, they may not be good because of spacing issues.
Maybe someone can provide their advice or knowledge.

Say I wanted to register tennisrackets.com . When people search tennis rackets they use a space between the two words. I am guessing that having no space in the domain name would make the name less valuable. Can you buy domains with spaces? It seems a hyphen may help with search results, but not considerably. I see the word type ins when I am reading here. I m guessing that means people directly typing into search engines. So how do you get effective domains for two words that need a space. Is this just one of the givens of domains? Any correspondence would be much appreciated.

Good question! The answer has two parts although some may not agree with the second part...

1) To start with, if you do a search in Google or other search engines for something with two words, you may notice that some results will show with those words together with no spaces. Google for sure will show you results that have both the words in the same page somewhere, but also show you some results they think may be good for the words run together.

A search for "tennis rackets" may well show a domain that starts with the text "tennisrackets", but will not show a domain that is like "headtennisrackets". They will do a perfect match from the start of the words, but not an embedded match. So a domain like tennisrackets.com is a very, very good domain.

2)There are no spaces allowed, but generally the hyphen is treated just like a space. So tennis-rackets.com is going to work pretty well depending on what other sites are out there in the listings. Most people don't like domains with hyphens, but I like them quote a bit because they can be quite effective.

Here's why: In my example of headtennisrackets.com you are not going to get matched for "tennisrackets" or "rackets", but with head-tennis-rackets.com you CAN get found for one or more of the words.

Now the advantage of having keywords in a domain is not great, but it does exist from what I have seen. So if you really want a domain and the non-hyphenated version is not available, you can consider one with hyphens.

Just remember that the resale value is not going to be as high. If I ever sell my domain Best-Free-Search-Engine-List.com for much money, it will be because of the site I have there, not because the domain is worth much. It's the reason that I later also registered bfsel.com as well and pointed it to the same site.

I'm glad I could help. It was sort of a newbie question, but this is a newbie area...

I went digging for posts that were not answered and found yours with some others. Most people won't go to that much trouble to help others, but I have found that most people appreciate getting some help - I know I do!
