Monte,

Thank you and to all the folks at Moniker for organizing this venue for our industry.

I listened to almost all of the auction via webmasterradio and you can only get so much without being there. It is likely that not all making comments have been to a live auction or fully understand what goes on behind the scenes to pull something like this off. Many details and nuances of the auction were only visible to those in the room.

From your and other posts here on NP I now personally have a much better understanding of the enormity of the task of paring down a list of 60,000 names from hundreds of sellers, keeping a room full of humans focused for more than one hour straight, the limitations and reality of time constraints at a rented facility, and the obvious conflict and sometimes fine line between satisfying the seller and buyer - both of which expect their perfect price. Sellers want and expect to get a high price for their "baby" and buyers want to find a steal. Their expectations are not always met but the market usually sorts most things out. The bigger the marketplace, the better the sorting.

Thinking about the auction, (BTW I had no names in the live auction but do have three names in the silent auction), I have a couple suggestions.
- Keep the auction length to two hours long or longer but with breaks or have morning and afternoon auction sessions, or day 2 and day 3 auctions. Each session would have equally good quality names.
- Have a list of "guaranteed live auction names" (200-250), AND have a list of "alternate live auction names" ready to go. Use as many as needed to fit the allotted time frame. Stipulate that all unsold names will enter the silent auction automatically.
- Let name owners submit two reserve prices - one for a live auction and one for a silent auction.
- Group a few similar names near each other.
- Promote several "featured" categories of names for each auction to draw in more outside interest. (bigger marketplace)
- Allow full viewing access to names in the silent auction to attract more bidders. (bigger marketplace)

I agree. Albert did leave himself very exposed to somewhat cynical interpretations of his post, but I'm sure that - once he gets accustomed to the skeptical assumptions of the typical domainer - his posts will be better appreciated.

This was my first domain auction. I have been involved with the Internet since 1991 as an ISP, but only a domainer for the last two years. It always amazes me of the names that I could have registered and retired on... :o ...it always amazes me how the Internet has grown and continues to grow...

I only have a few domains in the silent auction, however I do plan to submit more names in the future for your events.

I was impressed with the quality of WebMasterRadio.FM. We use to do a broadcast for Wireless ISPs a few years ago, but the quality was not as good. I think a WebCam(s) is going to burn up the bandwidth, with all the interested on lookers... :lol:

My 75 yo mother was listening with me as the auction progressed and she just loved it! She was involved in estate auctions and agreed that your auctioneer was great.

The bit in inverted commas was simply an afterthought on my part: without knowing any of the people involved personally, I would speculate that Albert is too genuine a guy to think of potential cynical interpretations of his posts.
