Hi,
Own a professional sports team name with .tv extension.
Should trademark issues be of concern with my .tv pro Sports team domain name? I would like to develop my name but don't want to confront any legal issues in the future. Any advice on what to do with my domain?

many will go after you for TM infringement if you make money off of it. Some might allow fan site, but you never know. BTW, a fan site probably wouldn't be allowed to have banners, adsense, or any other way to make money off the name or that again would be infringement.

I own ChicagoBearsSite.com and started a half-ass blog on it.
But I get an OK from the Bears to use it as long as I went through
them for any Bear products I wanted to sell..

This is the part that goes beyond "for the love" and into "commercial use". So at this point, it can be considered bad faith usage. And quite honestly, most owners of "fansites" are in it for the money and use the "fanbsite" as a cover to try to get away with it.

Finally, someone who did it right.

A sports team not only owns their name, but lets look at it deeper.

Chicago Bears, NFL, NIKE, Russell, STARTER, ReeBok...all officially licensed products.

Violating a TM simply by having their logo is a no-no. Try selling any licensed merchandise? Well, you won't have to worry about one and only one court order.

I know DNQuest has some serious knowledge of the legal system (at least he has proven that).
And I know he does not like TM domains (something we share to a great extent).
However, I do sense a certain prejudgement when similar posts arise.
I know for a fact that I do on rare occasions, register names that are purely for the love of the subject/topic, or as a hate site, with no intent of making any money.
Especially when it comes to sports, I can completely understand why someone might want to own their favorite team in any extension, just to own it, and may run a forum or a blog.
Not everyone is 'out there' to make a quick buck from regging domains that are TMd.
Especially in fan sites.

Unfortunately, there is a preceived notion that TMed domains are registered to make a buck. Also unfortunately, they are. I strongly believe there is a very small percentage of "fansites" which are run as legit fansites. Though I do not like TMed domains, I am 100% for fansites. As I have stated in the past, I do own several fansites and I run them according to the opinions I give out. I have been challenged and I still have them. I have been offered some nice deals, but I truly had no interest in selling (one included being in a clubhouse on opening day and hanging out for the full day, believe me, I thought about that real hard, but turned it down). I have no problem if TMed domains are used in good faith and I have repeatedly posted the proper way to do so (though I haven't done it recently).

When I post, I try to do it in a non-bias fashion, but I will admit with "fansites", you need to prove to me that you are using it in good faith as opposed to just telling me. Honestly, many questions about "fansites" on these forums are from people looking to make a buck. I do call them out for it and some do admit that I may be accurate. But usually, the domains are registered with bad faith intent.
