Rareplay has conducted a survey of the mobile web presence of the Top 1000 US Brands:

The survey dated January 2007 contains a full list of the very few mobile sites and indicate the address, the type (wap, html) and if there is autodetection.
Basically, 92% have (had) no mobile sites, 6% a mobile version and 2% a mobile version with autodetect. Therefore, it does not say much at this stage, but I think this can be a great tool if we can follow the evolution and compare in 6 months, 12 months, etc...(see how many sites are created and if they have .mobi adress or autodetection).
Also there are some indications by categories.
