the initial naming convention based on the early issuance of dot-com and dot-net were all based on tooty-fruity casual naming, and never incorporated any deeper understanding of the global naming laws. The initial idea was based on making a quick buck, as it was expected that the entire universe would register and be happy with the first five available suffixes -- com, net, gov, edu and mil.

Interesting article, but is it just me that read it as a journalists atempt at stringing together a lot of ill informed sound bytes in an attempt to gain recognition ?
Some things just did not ring true for me ? It seemed to miss most of the main points whilst being ideal to appeal to the 'masses'.

Mind you it is nearly 5 in the morning her so I might have missed something

The key point here is that the WWW adddressing system started as a tooty-fruity party concoction made up of words like commerce, network, organization, education and military.

As the Web grows, addressing will naturally evolve to allow for better meaning and relevance as website naming tools for its various constituencies;
-business
-information
-travel
-jobs
-mobile
-sex
etc..

Dependence on so-called direct navigation through so-called "default" old extensions will wane over time, even today no more than 15% of all traffic is generated by address bar type-in, and that INCLUDES repeat "learned type-in" traffic to sites like google.com and ebay.com.
