Tommy Butler owns the domain name Glasgow.com, but now it’s up for sale, and in a podcast interview with Technology.ie he talks about his reasons for selling, his thoughts on the value of domain names, his strategy for domain success, and why a good domain is a business asset.

“To me the domain is the heart and soul of your online business. It’s not your social media accounts. It’s not your Facebook account. And I say this to every business: If you have the right domain name for your business, your business will succeed no matter what.”

“People have been uneducated about what is the value of a domain name, and I think that’s why social media and SEO have become far more important … They’ll happily spend two thousand, three thousand, getting their SEO done, but if they took that money and bought the domain name, the domain name will bring in better results than the SEO – and they’ll own the name!"

“And then if you’ve got a good name, and you’ve put SEO on it, it’s a fantastic combination!”

I'm unsure why Tommy Butler is stating that the sale price was under a NDA when he himself posted an article in October 2003 on another domain name forum which stated he acquired it for £60,000 (http://d.bz/glasgowcom - membership of forum required to view). The author of the article must have obtained that figure from somewhere. :)

Nat Cohen/Telepathy reminded him about the NDA. Or he decided he didn't want people to know.

I suspect the latter. I'm also skeptical of much interest in the domain name and wonder if the latest is PR designed to pump up before a hopeful sale. I just viewed the web site and it appears devoid of content in most places and I don't ever remember there ever really being any beyond the homepage, even looking back through archive.org. I used to look from time to time and in my opinion it was mostly amateur crapola.

http://Technology.ie is the only place I've heard about it.

No interest in major city .com name? Doubt it unless he's asking a crazy amount of $$.

He posted these three article links recently on another .uk orientated domain name forum.

http://www.deadlinenews.co.uk/2016/04/28/glasgow-com-sale-half-million/ - states purchased for £100,000 in 2001 (although been told two other figures previously, as already stated) and "Mr Butler, from Glasgow, revealed today that he is fielding offers in the region of £460,000."

http://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/news/glasgow-news/glasgowcom-could-sell-1-million-11272342 "
Tommy Butler has already received six figure offers for the domain, with the highest so far understood to be around £650,000."

In my personal opinion it's not worth either amount, even if I believed the supposed offers were real.

Thanks for sharing @davidthornton. Seems the news is more popular in UK.

How come you don't think it's worth much? Have you had experiences with Butler?

He has been all over press in Glasgow promoting the sale.

Was in another local Glasgow newspaper with this story & with him looking to sell some more local GLasgow Geo's.
