As others have mentioned, myself included, that there seems to be a huge amount of regging right now for all names .TV.

Great Domains .Com has been asking for .TV extentions more so than other extentions. SCience TV refused the $50,000 + bid on ebay and like another thread mentioned Mr Stern thought it important enough to reg Howard. TV to satisfy his egomania!!

My question is this, where is the tipping point - where the pendulam swings so far in .TV's favor that it gets its mass aceptance.........will it be a huge promo campaign by the likes of google, will it be when TV programes can be viewed at normal TV speeds and clarity - what needs to happen for .TV to become the new .COM??

Whatever the answer - it is looking pretty soon to me!

Well first off don't read into anything between Great Domains and .tv. They are both owned by Verisign so that is a biased relationship.

Secondly I do not believe there will be anything to make .tv bigger than.com. .com is oxygen and while there are other elements that matter Oxygen is the most relevant to humans and IMO .com is the most relevant to Internet Users.

The key will be for .tv sites that are established to become POP CULTURE sites that garner a lot of traffic and a lot of MindShare. Along with that some major Entertainment and Media companies using the.tv ext prominently.

There are still many LL and LLL.tv avail with great Letter combinations as that number shrinks I think it will be one helpful metric to use in seeing how .tv is becoming bigger. The number of regs has picked up over the last year coinciding with the creation of this sub forum(hmmm) .tv corp is well aware of that. I get emails from people who have never joined here saying thank you I read that forum and regged a .tv for my business.

.tv is a natural for business and people who just want to get across that their site will be Video or media related. SO it makes sense for a Howard.tv or any celeb to use.tv.

On the flip side and you know I am pro.tv, an event like the HRTS auction shows .tv has a long way to go when a name like KIDS.tv goes for $10,100 IMO that is a xxx,xxx name. Perfect to build a business around with so many options I like Kids.tv over anything but .com.

The bigger key here is .tv allows people right now to find a name in a less saturated but intuitive ext that is growing more popular. The thing is to pick one or two domains and develop I never believed it made sense to take a .com approach and own 50- 100 .tv domains. If they are not premium generics most likely you not turning 10% of those over in a year, and the reg fees add up. .com you have other options; PPC, blow a name out cheap get some money back. Very rare a non generic .tv getting any traffic for ppc and you not going to sell it for half of what you paid as it gets near renewal.

So what matters more with .tv is not where the ext will be tomorrow, but where are you with your best .tv domain today getting ready for the future of the VIDEONET.

IMO

Nice answer, equity, though I would argue the amount of domains one should own. I believe that is, to a degree dependant upon the amount of risk and excess money you have to spare. I absolutely agree, that .tv domains need to be developed in order to maximise profit potential - even more so than any other extension, really. But I'm not going to assume the domains I want to purchase will be avalable four years from now.

Unfortunately, I've had a pretty major financial setback, and am dealing with an unbelievable cash flow issue - but I do not regret for a minute regging more than one or two .tv domains. I will get past my struggles with most of my domains intact, and some pretty swell developed sites, as well, by the end of the year.

GreatDomains traditionally sticks a huge pricetag on the domains they sponsor, and I would not really base any patterns upon their listings. Still, it's nice every once in a while to see one of your domains listed there: afterall, you can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket. But the fact that both are owned by the same company should minimalize the importance of getting listed there.
