They used it as a one off for their holding company because "ABC" works perfectly with XYZ.

Yet they changed there company to alphabet from Google ??? Hahah. You are all missing the bigger picture. It don't matter what you think cause last time I checked were all just basically holders for investments in a large pot of money owned by Google who in the end makes the decisions and an audience like Facebook who just purchased HackTV.XYZ is just another an example of such. .com is hugely overpopulated and it don't matter if takes money to make money; names are overpriced due to rare aspects. BS.com is worth 4.5 Million, why because some guy wants to label bullshit for a million US dollars? XYZ is just another land for investing like Beverly hills versus the hamptons. Two different worlds

I have a serious question... Are those actual "Premium" domains or domains that would be considered "premium" if they where in .COM?
I ask this because in my opinion, way too many people now a days are loosing sight of what constitutes a actual "premium" (category buster names like Computer, Sex, Car, Gas/Fuel, Work, Casino, Code, Home... etc) domain names for something second rate domain names (like Thesaurus, VacationHomes, PlayPoker, LearnToCode, FixComputers,... etc) which would be considered premium in .COM (and only .COM).

Just curious on what you consider premium. My master list of premium words pretty much all got bumped back for XYZ as a majority of these names where reserved by the registry.

Words are premium regardless of the .com

premium Words : which more monthly searches without being a registered trademark, like .. michelin, CVS Pharmacy, ...

i think premium is either one letter or two letters, with up to 10 characters total, Try to keep it as short as possible tho

Also I dont buy big long gtlds like mystocks.finance or playpiano.hotel or sellphones.buisness
who the hell wants to type in tons of characters.

What i would consider premium tho is something like stocks.finance or BBB.Buisness

I agree with you @mad409. There is a distinct difference between actual premium words and what is now considered "premium" by way of .COM.
Drugs (dot) com would be a category killer. I am sure we could all agree on that.
Now, buydrugs (dot) com would (by most) be considered a premium name.
By virtue of being a .COM it makes it a premium name because of the fact that the category killers where sold some 20+ years ago.

It is my belief that people are getting this confused. If you look around at some of the names that are being presented (not just XYZ but all the nTLDs) as "premium", you may start to see what I am seeing.

CardRatings
CasinoHouse
DiscountCoupons.... and the list can go on (several names chosen at random that people registered in different nTLDs).

I do believe that many people are making the mistake of mixing up what is considered premium in .COM and trying to apply that to nTLDs.
nTLDs is your chance to buy category killer domain names (the true premium domain names) but more often then not, the registry reserves these names for themselves.

With new TLDs coming out weekly... why would any settle for less then a tier 1 category killer premium keyword domain name is beyond me. **I know, people will make the argument that this extension is going to be the next .COM... but in all likelihood with the number of new TLDs coming out, there is not going to be another .COM but rather an equilibrium between many/all of the nTLDs and the gTLDs.

I do not understand why there is such a conservative discourse about .com, far from the reality, future and the development and growth of technology.

there will be another .com ?..no, there will be better extensions and better opportunities than the .com

The domain business is changing, from a few to some thousands of investors, and perhaps, have a premium word now it is much more valuable, for the simple reason that is already known the power of good name to compete against companies that have monopolized many online services.

.com is not dead, and never die but nevertheless, gradually stop having leadership.

This is nothing new. Companies have been registering other then .COM domains for a long time (mostly defensive).
But for the sake of argument, I would like to point out that Facebook, Google, Amazon, Overstock, Godaddy, Taco Bell, and many other larger companies have and use .CO domain names.
FB (dot) CO (forwards to FaceBook)
TA (dot) CO (forwards to Taco Bell)
G (dot) CO (is used by Google along with GOO (dot) GL)
A (dot) CO (forwards to Amazon)
O (dot) CO (forwards to Overstock... and they even attempted to re-brand with it at one time)

What you have pointed out is useless because these kinds of registrations have been made across a wide variety of domain extensions. We mostly refer to them as "defensive registrations" and it a sticking point for some of the people here who think that nTLDs are conning large corporations/businesses out of $$$ for defensive registrations.

Let me bring this full circle so that there is no misunderstanding here. The moment one of these *BIG* companies (lets say XYZ since we are under that thread) uses a given extension for *MAJOR* project or re-brand is the moment that the nTLD will be thrust into the spotlight.
For this to happen (which Overstock tried and failed), it would require a massive amount of capital being invested into this entity.
For all your arguments, Google has not invested intensively into XYZ... it made a landing page.
FaceBook utilized one of their programmers domain name as a portal for a live feed... once!
Other sites have redirects to their normal .COM sites which can be seen across many extensions.

Nothing listed above is going to reshape the domain extensions as we know it. It will take a full on capital investment either for a new start up that takes off or for a total re-brand of an existing company.
Probably not best to hold your breath for a re-brand.

With startups.... they have literally thousands of extensions to chose from.
Many people will argue that .IO is the extension for startups.
The point is that it can be any extension out there and could happen (if it does) at any time.

Dont waste your time or money registering second tier domain names. If you are going to play the nTLD game... do yourself a favor and ONLY register category killer domain names. If they are not available in a given extension... they another extension.... there are hundreds/thousands out there with more to come.

Rick Schwartz has also invested in many other extensions. XYZ is only one extension. Didnt he also have Flowers (dot) Mobi in which he got burned on big time?
