BTW, a few other reasons .mobi will succeed as a strong alternative to the mobile web.
1) .COM is a parking lot of paid links. Shoe string budget development will not allow for an outstanding .COM domain name purchase in the marketing effort.
2) Most promotional marketers are not all that bright. Now, I say this as a Consumer Packaged Goods marketer. There is a massive difference. Promotional marketers know how to spend money; CPG marketers know when and why to spend money. We're Promotion, Packaging, Product and Pricing specialists. So, where am I going with this? Some promotional marketers are likely to grab on to .mobi because it sounds like it should be the mobile domain destination. It could be as simple as this. Few will understand how to do a breakeven analysis on a .COM purchase.
Anyway... Just rambling a bit tonight. I love sparks.
