What happens to the ones that don't sell or don't get bids? Aren't these names straight from .mobi or do they have owners?

They're straight from Mtld.

I really wish Sedo didn't stupidly announce to the world what the reserve range on each name is... Really takes the fun out of bidding + means we can't consider any bids which haven't met reserve as legitimate indicators of interest in the .mobi extension.

Reece Berg above statement made me laugh -- Who would honestly bid $4999 when it's clearly labeled the reserve is at least $5000.

This should be a no reserve auction! Most names have no bids because it's pointless to bid unless your going 5k or better D-:

Just give em away Mtld so we can get some dev going!

I completely agree Keith!

If Mtld has any confidence in their extension, they should be selling these at no reserve and getting them into the hands of people who will develop them.

That's really the only way to see the ecosystem grow imho. It's sad to see Mtld with so little vision of the future and so focused on fattening their wallet now...

Did anyone read the small print regarding this auction? Quite interesting. The winners are required to set up .mobi compliant websites and more or less develop them within less than a year or risk loosing the name(s) again...

I don't agree with you Reece, if MTLD had NO confidence in the extension
they would sell them at no reserve, and selling at no reserve won't say they
will be developed, as everybody can see.
Selling at a low price when the market is down is usualy not a good business
practice., this goes for more things.
They would only do this if they see no future.
MTLD is not in a hurry, they have the confidence, they just don't think
like the domainers whos goals are totally different. Lets be honest, the
majority is speculating in the .mobi market and are not interested in developping.

Mtld is hoarding 5000 premium domains and all these auctions come with development requirements, so unless domainers have all become developers over night (which from personal experience is likely very far from the truth), the people purchasing these domains are genuinely interested in developing them.

Getting these developed would be good for the ecosystem both in the short term and especially in the long term. Some people are now talking about Mtld rolling out these domains over a 10 year plan -- that's insane!

I'm very surprised that some of the people who work for Mtld and seem to have been such visionaries in their previous accomplishments are now making what is clearly mobi-suicide. A 10-year plan is insane by anyone's measure. Nobody knows where things will be within 10 years, however ICANN has made a few things clear and that's that we can expect a whole lot of new extensions within 10 years. The longer Mtld takes to differentiate themselves from the pack, the lower and lower the odds of them succeeding will become.

The time to act is NOW -- not next year after ICANN releases 50 new extensions, not 5 years from now when mobile internet has become readily adopted and m-dot is the de facto standard, and certainly not 10 years from now which is insane by anyone's standard, except apparently Mtld's -- I guess they've been selling themselves pink rosy glasses lately if they think the market will allow them 10 years to bring mobi to mainstream.

I thought I posted an answer to this here earlier .. unless I did not hit the submit button ... oops ...

Yes, that is common knowledge that the "premium" names released for over a year now at Sedo or TRAFFIC auctions do come with development requirements.

More info on that at: http://mtld.mobi/node/1135

Yeah that's called mindless boredom bidding; serves no real purpose, but helps cure boredom. :santa:

Boredom bidders are in for a rude awakening (good news for real bidders though). It seems Sedo and/or mTLD have lowered the reserves for this auction. Yesterday Games.mobi had a reserve price range of $50k-$100k and today it says $25,000-$49,000. Booty.mobi had a reserve price range of $1,000-$4,999 and today it was changed to $1-$499. Among others..

results are better than I expected. Some good names did go cheap in my opinion.

I picked up racing (.) mobi and I am happy about that. Got out bid on the others I was going for.

i expect that the Auction would have done much better in better economic times at it was a good opportunity to pick up some great names at deflated prices.

Purple.mobi and Beef.mobi were good buys -- I should have bid but got carried away too much in discussions. Games.mobi -- massively overpaying unless there's a mighty good dev plan imho!

You can see just how far the .mobi market has fallen from this auction, eg games.mobi getting $44,000 after getting $401,500 in the auction last year, a fall of 89%.

It is hard to judge a sale now based on a ridiculous bloated price to start with.
I have no doubt the .MOBI market is in the decline.

But does anyone really think Games.mobi was worth $400K in the first place?
