Ok, I might be the only one who get peeved by this, not sure. Just venting.

What is up with a certain domainers without any coding experience, giving quotes in teh web development board lately? Some of these jerks are REALLY making developers look bad. The other day someone tells a user that a job would take $10K, when it would honestly be done for well under $1K. Today, some n00b goes and tells a woman that a form, form parser and simple search tool could cost $4500. WTF?

Ok, I suggest that everyone just stays in their area of expertise. I hate seeing people give crap advice that they know nothing of, prolly helping someone get scammed in the mean time.

Sorry folks, just venting. Don't hurt me too horribly.

I've been looking for a price guide, know of any?
I want to know what the rates are also...

Well, it really depends on the developer's expertise, what the job consists of, time it would take, etc. Now with my pricing, I use a sliding scale. My normal base pay is $35 per hour, but I have been in the biz many-many-years and know my stuff. I do just about everything. But, I give discounts to stay competitive. So after all of the discounts I give, I am only charging about half of my base rate. The other half, I claim on my taxes. Now some people charge less because they want you in their portfolio, which I had to do at one point. The difference betweek me and the new guy, is that I will give extra features and such because I have money backing me up. However the new guy cannot usually afford to take the extra time to go the extra mile because he has to go take time to find more customers.

So, the creation of an online form, form parsing script, database design, simple search tool, and basic XHTML/CSS design I would charge $30 to $60 depending on how much data is being passed around, for example. If it is really jsut collecting the name and email address and storing into the database, that would be only about $15 to $20.

These people that come straight out without a breakdown of the costs and say that it will cost $10K, well that is a figure they pulled out of their rear most likely because that is how much they WANT, not how much the job actually is worth. Subcontracors often pull this crap. Never deal witha middle man, go straight to your developers.

I maintain you in your position but can't suppose what could be done in order to protect us from that all. Just take it as it is.

i think that's why most other forums have a posting fee in such sections. That'll keep the noobs away for a while at least. Or atleast they will some competitive and realistic quotes instead of just trying their luck and getting paid what they want.
