I've also received this type of email just this morning.

I was quite surprised when the offer price by the email is SO MUCH HIGHER than the original offer price that I quoted to them.

Now the email is from George Hamilton ([email protected]). Same email contents as above.

Don't think this has been mentioned yet in this thread, so just for the sake of anyone reading who doesn't already know:

This scam is in no way limited to domainsecondhand.com. Basically, ANY email you get that asks YOU to pay for an appraisal is a scam. Tell them to buy their own appraisal.

Later offered $5k with the standard requirement of appraisal.

I countered that he was welcome to submit a binding offer at Sedo.com, and that any appraisal was part of his due diligence, and not something I (as the seller) would do or pay for.

Hi All,

He is on a roll with the above email and name "Scott Withrow". Great commentary from all on this scam. Just received the same email as above.

I was suspicious by the lack of a legit contact details in his signature, and there not be a legit site to back this up. Always good to have a conversation with the person. This will filter legit offers.

My reply: "Thanks for your email. Domain name is not for sale, I am actually developing it myself."

I'll keep you all posted on any subsequent reply.

Cheers
Iain

The first tip off for me was the fact that domainsecondhand.com is just a parked page deal. Then I did a internet search and arrived here.

Same exact Emails. Word for word.

Wow-ee,

I got exactly the same emails, word for word from this Domainsecondhand. The person gave the name Scott Withrow.

He said they were looking for domains. Offered $5000 for 7 names but wanted them appraised at the place he suggested. "ResearchAppraisals" (He didn't trust anyone else). That's what put the red flag up for me because he said he didn't trust Sedo, and he didn't trust GoDaddy. He kept referring me to "ResearchAppraisals" to get the appraisals. I would suggest another and he always came back to "ResearchAppraisals" to do it. It just smelled fishy that he didn't trust Sedo or GoDaddy.

Sedo has one of the most extensive appraisals around and he still insisted that I go to the place he suggested.

Glad I found this posting, it would have run over $300 to get 7 names done.:o

Domainsecondhand.com. Where are they getting our info?

Hey everybody. I'm not much of a detective, but yesterday I did a search for "sell domains" and chose a place called ImpressiveDomains.com. I only signed up with them and listed the name that I was contacted about. May be just a coincidence but if anybody else listed there, it may be a red flag.

Got an email from DomainSecondhand.com as well.

I immediately knew it was scam, when they proposed a specific appraisal "company" and gave me a link to a "forum" which is not a forum in reality. Just a fake one-pager.

Then I did IP check on the email and it turned out to be from Russia. Then I used Google Translate to write him in Russian and ask how is the weather in Russia nowadays? ) Did not hear from him ever since.

I recieved this email below and I might even follow through with it. If not I know I scared the crap out them. Else they wouldn't even respond anymore.

It's a big risk to proceed without professional valuation. I already spoke
to industry experts and they prohibited me to do business without
valuation..

Without manual valuation nobody will buy. You'll sit on your domain for
years in this case, paying renewal fees to your registrar. Just think about
it. So sooner or later, you'll have to obtain an appraisal. Why waste time
now?

As a seller, you can use a valuation certificate to sell names to other
buyers. I cannot do the same because I don't keep control over your domain.

I'm still interested in your domain. Hope you'll change your position. I
simply don't want to take additional risks.

Thank you for understanding. I'm looking forward to do business with you.

Mr. Withrow,

Its the responsiblity of the purchaser to have evaluated the value of the product prior to offer of purchase. I consider your written offer from you the purchaser had followed through with your evaluations of the product prior to an offer.

Please send the amount offered to the invoice via paypal. If the monies are not deposited in three business days the matter will be handled by my legal council.

Thanks,

It's a standard practice to show independent valuation to buyers/resellers.
Nobody will do business without it. I'm a businessman and have no intention
of changing rules which help both parties to avoid additional risks.

Of course, investors never take into account auto-generated valuations. So
manual valuation is a "must" too.

I read the following information about appraisals at:

Can you accept 5,000 USD?

Do you sell domain with a web site or just the name?

Domain without content is ok with me. Web site is not necessary.

Have you had your domain names evaluated in the past? I mean domain appraisals. Without valuation we cannot be sure in the sale price. It's very important for me in terms of reselling too. But we must engage a valuation company with REAL manual service. So I will only accept valuations from independent sources I and my partners trust.

To avoid mistakes I asked domain experts about reputable appraisal companies.

Please check this blog with suggestions from other sellers and buyers:
domainexplorer . org/Archive-09-2009/91637524.htm

If, for example, the valuation comes higher you can adjust your asking price accordingly. It will be fair. I also hope you can give me 12% - 15% discount.

After you send me the valuation via email (usually it takes 1-2 days to obtain it) we'll continue our negotiations.

What is your preferred payment method: Escrow.com, International wire transfer, PayPal.com or something else?

Hope we can come to an agreement fast.

Looking forward to your reply.

Unfortunately, they know enough to NOT make an offer. They simply asked you: "Can you accept 5,000 USD?". That's still in the negotiation stage (if it were real). If they stated "I will buy your domain for $5,000", that would be an offer.

Sedo is a good broker and we can use it for transfer/transaction.
Unfortunately , Sedo is not acceptable as an appraiser because your names
are listed with them and they are not independent. They are interested in
earning 10% commission on every sale. I need appraisals from a company
which is not interested in selling your domains.

I heard many appraisal companies often made inaccurate appraisals. So I
cannot accept appraisal from each and every site. I will only accept
appraisals from independent appraisal companies I know and trust.

Hello,

5,000 USD is a good starting offer.
It is only the domain name. There is not a website with the name.
Before I can evaluate the domain name, I need to know how serious you are about buying the name.
The money I spend will have to be recouped somehow.
I too am willing to negoteate. I accept Paypal payment.
Please respond A.S.A.P. about your offer.

Thanks

I too received an email from DomainSecondhand.com last week. This is the first time I had ever received one of these scam emails, but I knew right away it wasn't legit. To make sure, I came here and did a search for it. Sure enough here it is laid out nicely for me to read about.

My email was perhaps a little more harsh then most as I replied with "Get f*cked, scammer." Haven't heard from them since. :)
