The word "Premium"

SpaceshipSpaceship
Watch
We need a new word for "Premium" when it comes to domain names. We'll find ourselves reading other threads filled with premium domain names and seeing something like wonderfulprettycolors.com or getsomejuice.com (no offense if these are yours). Or even Baba.com, hey it has premium letters. Some of us will post about our own "Premium" domains like these. It's a nice word, but it tends to get overused and almost has no meaning in the domain industry anymore.

So what new word can we use now to mean poker.com, slots.com, business.com, domaining.com, etc...?

The Gold Standard :)...hehe good question many words are overused and have no real meaning anymore.

It doesn't matter. Whatever word is chosen to denote quality will be corrupted over time anyway.

The problem isn't that people use the word 'premium' for names that are not premium; the problem is that they genuinely believe their bad names are 'premium' names and honestly have no clue where the breakpoint is for quality.

Call it diamond-encrusted platinum, call it whatever you will. In time, you will see people in the $20 forum using precisely that same term to describe their .ws names and PokerPlayMoneysForReal.net

How about Creamium, as in cream of the crop

It's called 'Dumbing Down' and it's happening in all walks of life.
Business
Education
Politics
Morals
etc.
The thing is, the only way to determine what is a 'Premium' domain, is by a load of domainers debating it's merits and most agreeing that it is premium.
Apply the dumbing down aspect, and it's not worth looking for another description. JMO.

I can't come up with a word, but I agree. It's definitely overused.

A new term, as mentioned, probably won't solve the problem. Experienced domainers will know a real premium domain when they see one.

No word is needed. "Premium" isn't a word that sells names, it is a bit like descriving something as good. People will know straight away whether it is a highly valuable name or not just by saying what it is.

I don't waste time getting caught up in what adjectives are used for domain names. What is premium to 1 person might not be to the next.

It is difficult to say right now. But I suppose you need to work with dictionary little bit to get more information regarding that.

Sorry, can't help myself but I noticed in your sig it mentions about "Premium Expired Domain Services" It seems a bit contradictory...

Back in the 70's, we called something "Bad" to suggest it was really good or ultra cool. As in "That's one bad Chevy."

Because of the premium misuse, I've found myself saying "true premium" ... which I don't really like. What about Top Premium domains? How long would that last? :)

So many people think as soon as they register a domain, it's instantly "premium" in their eyes, and it's lost pretty much all of its meaning.

I know, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but at this point it's more of a joke among domainers than anything. You know, the ones that actually have a clue about what's a good domain and what isn't.

How about no word at all? If your domain is truly "premium" (whatever that means anymore) you probably don't have to describe it with a word like that.

I personally don't consider any of my domains premium because I believe it has a negative/gimmicky connotation. I usually use words like "quality" to describe them, because I don't think they're complete garbage, but they're nowhere near top-tier either.

Maybe "top-tier" could be the new "premium"?

Premium means: 'of greater value than others of its kind', (Source: Dictionary.com). If someone thinks that his name is of greater value than average reg fee names, then what's harm in it?

Premium is a standard English word and is not exclusive to domains. We don't need any other word at all.

Premium is just another trick to draw attention to a listing , like when on Ebay - the Seller writes "Free push to your account"

we like to see the word free and has good contention to our mind , same as premium - true that when being over used our mind tend to start and ignore it to the point when maybe the better option is not to write "premium" in your listing at all , even if your name is really are a premium one .

i know that when i am looking thorough domain listing in ebay and such ( hate it - its like crawling through the garbage :) ) when i see "Premium Domain name " so its almost represent for me the opposite of it - which is over price junk .

when your name is really good , you dont need to add fancy titles , and the name itself says it all
i think its also some kind of rule to life in General :)
imagine a women walking around with a sign - " I am gorgeous " .... if you are gorgeous/premium - we will see it ourself

How would you know if it's contradictory or not, until you've tried it? :)

To add to the confusion in .mobi, "Premium" also indicates a domain name that was set aside by the registry from general registration for alternate release. This is indicated in the whois:

Registrant ID:mTLD-Premium

If released by the registry, these Premiums will have the registrant ID of the new owner, but the "Premium" status will still be indicated in the whois like this:

Trademark Name: Premium Name

There is also a "Reserved" pool that mostly corresponds to those domains that ICANN required be withheld, such as other tld's like com.mobi, gov.mobi, uk.mobi, etc. The whois will indicate this:

Registrant ID:mTLD-Reserved
