The value of extensions

Hello everyone

I'm new to the forum and to selling domains, and i have a lot to learn and many doubts, i know there are some "established" things in this domaining world, like .com is superior to all, extension "x" is not worth it etc...

From my newcomer logical some things don't make much sense to me sometimes, and sometimes i get the feeling that the value of a domain for someone who lives from buying and selling domains, is muche different from someone who just wants to develop websites. Here's some of my thoughts about it.

For domainers .com is superior to all, to a webdeveloper the most important is the name of the domain no matter what extension.

For domainers short domains even if it's just a few non sense letters is very valuable, for a webdeveloper the most important again is a name that reflects the business even if it's a longer domain with 3 or 4 words.

Besides for SEO purposes, the extension and domain name don't count much if it all, right?

I would like to know your opinion about this, i would apreciate it, like i said these are the thoughts of a newbie

Thanks to all in advance

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

I think that browsers will fill in the ".com" before any other extension. So type "yahoo", and it will go to "yahoo.com".

Other than that, personally, I like ".net" MORE for certain things, like my own homepage, (which is undeveloped) is a .net, not by choice over a ".com", but I like it fine just the same.

I think it's just how the business works, has worked and will work.

but i'm a noob as well brother!

Hey dwnii

Thanks for your comment, i guess you're right those are the established rules, but many times we see a lot of exceptions, i see many good one or two words domains with other extensions being sold for very high prices, it all depends on what the buyer wants and is willing too.

You're right about the typing in browsers, people usually go first for .com, but i was talking about people typing in search engines, those usually never type an extension, just the words they're looking for, like travel to france, they will simply write those words, or travel to france prices, travel to france information etc... here they'll leave the extensions out.

Regards
