I'm no more a fan of George Soros than I am of Trump, but I agree with him on this point:
"A society which is based on the recognition that nobody is possession of the truth, and therefore you need a critical process and you have to respect other peopleβs opinions.β
Why is this so hard for the alt-right to accept?
This idea came from the comparison of fascism and communism inspired by the work of Karl Popper in
The Open Society and Its Enemies (1945), where he says, β
If our civilisation is to survive, we must break with the habit of deference to great men.β
That's why populism fails. Popperβs conclusion:
βIt is the longing of uncounted unknown men to free themselves and their minds from the tutelage of authority and prejudice. It is their attempt to build up an open society. It is their unwillingness to sit back and leave the entire responsibility for ruling the world to human or superhuman authority. This revolution had created powers of appalling destructiveness; but they may yet be conquered."
