The system is broken, however the Govt to me isn’t going to fix it.

Gotta admit these days I’m not trusting the government to fix much of anything. They’re all too busy with partisan pissing contests.

But there has to be a solution. I don’t hear complaints from friends in the UK or Denmark, and my UK friends are expats so they know our health care system well enough to compare. We’re a “superpower” and we’re late to the game - maybe if anyone actually tried we could improve on what other countries got wrong?

But the insurance lobby is powerful and not going away without a fight. You want to talk about useless paper pushers, how about the one who sits at a desk, reads a few numbers and denies someone payment for lifesaving treatment? Bankrupt some, kill a few others, all in a day’s work.

I also think Government officials should have to deal with the same health plans as their constituents. Not that it will matter that much - most if them are in the 1% to begin with - but maybe a few of them will realize how other people live and develop a shred of empathy. I think overall there’s a huge disconnect between their lives and the reality of those they govern and that’s a problem.

Air traffic controllers and safety inspectors - that’s a group I left off my list yesterday. Working without pay. I’d call them essential, unless we abandon all air travel.

Geir Lundestad told the AP news agency that the committee hoped the award would strengthen Mr Obama.

Instead, the decision was met with criticism in the US. Many argued he had not had any impact worthy of the award.

Mr Lundestad, writing in his memoir, Secretary of Peace, said even Mr Obama himself had been surprised.

"No Nobel Peace Prize ever elicited more attention than the 2009 prize to Barack Obama," Mr Lundestad writes.

"Even many of Obama's supporters believed that the prize was a mistake," he says. "In that sense the committee didn't achieve what it had hoped for".
