To Mr-X's point above about the woman's comment, there are any number of colloquialisms that once were considered absolutely benign but are now regarded as Not Politically Correct because various groups have decided to read too much in to them.

It seems through the ages (including here in the US until the late 1800's I believe) and across continents (thus races & ethnicities) public lynchings, guillotinings, mass executions, etc of convicted criminals used to be considered "entertainment" and would draw big crowds who would come spend the day socializing and watching people die. (Think the Roman Coliseum...) Now days these types of events are considered horrible, barbaric and distasteful. Seems times change and peoples attitudes change as to what is socially acceptable and what isn't. Go figure...

In decades past to say "I like them so much that I'd attend a public lynching" was saying nothing more than "I like this person so much I'd even do something I wouldn't normally feel comfortable or be happy about doing." It is not a statement of approval of the event in question.

It's kind of like saying, "A friend will help you move. But a REAL friend will help you move the body."

This isn't actually suggesting a real friend will help commit or cover up a crime. It's a statement that the person can be depended upon to be there under both good and (really) bad circumstances.

Based upon the perceived age of the politician and geographic location of her upbringing, I don't think her comment was any sort of dog whistle. But considering today's PC environment, her state's history and the fact that pols are always under extreme scrutiny, she should have been a bit more careful in her word choices.
