Republicans control both chambers of Congress + the White House. All Americans know that. They still couldn't manage to keep the government open on their own. It's all the more surprising since all parties say they want a DACA deal. Need to find a more convincing excuse than the usual blame game. Even without Democrats it's not clear Republicans even have the votes required to keep the government open on their own. No, having more Republican votes will not fix the disarray at the Republican party.
Besides, the funding bill is just a stopgap measure... not a long-term solution to prevent that shutdown circus in the future.

Our current POTUS' own comments on government shutdown back in 2013:
Politics is a fickle master. Was Trump still a democrat then? :)

Not how it works Kate. Budget resolutions require more than a simple majority. Not enough R's in the senate to pass a budge without democrat votes.

DACA has nothing to do with the budget. No reason to give amnesty to illegal immigrants, their parent, grand parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, second cousins, their second cousins.

We have a right and obligation to prevent another immigration rush for the hope of getting amnesty sometime in the future. We can increase legal immigration but have to fix illegal immigration / border security first.

My take: After #DurbinGate Schumer thought the media would support him and he has nothing to lose by shutting down the Gov. He doesn't expect or want a compromise on DACA rule. He wants to keep full turmoil until November.

This is where it gets interesting.
The motion to proceed vote indeed requires 60 votes. But passing the bill would require only 51 votes.
The Republicans have 51 votes. But not all Senate Republicans support the spending bill. A few have said they would oppose their bill or wouldn't support it. So they very likely don't have the majority required anyway. So maybe the solution would be to bring their own house in order. But then it's not politics if you can't blame the other side :xf.rolleyes:

Yep. If McConnell actually wanted to win he could keep the entire Senate in session, call VP Pence, force Lindsey Graham and Rand Paul into voting.

But if one Republican left the room the D's could call for a vote and the CR would be voted down. Graham would rather chew his own leg off then hand Trump a win or vote against amnesty I think.

If I'm simplifying a little bit, back in 2013 (the last shutdown remember ?) Republicans thought it was worth shutting down the government in an effort to defund Obamacare. But who benefits from Obamacare if not the most vulnerable Americans.
More seriously, I think those repeated political standoffs are worrying and the sign of dysfunctional government. The two-party duopoly is toxic and leading to paralysis.

Without the rest of the world you are nothing. Yes, you are big and we are small. But you are broke (and morally bankrupt too).

Huh? What facts can you present to back that statement up? The US doesnt โ€œNeedโ€ anything outside. It could do quite well on its own. The only reason the Chinese are a threat as they copied everything the free world invented in tech, then turn around repackaging it to US consumers. Russia has more brain power and innovation than just about anywhere else than the US. I would like to see them annex all of europe except the iberian peninsula. The rest of the world needs the US as a stabilizing force. Not the opposite. I am sure that banning everything and becoming an island, it would do fine, at least for those without McMansions and 10 mpg SUVโ€™s and spoiled. They might โ€œsufferโ€. I hope they could extend the shutdown, demonstrate all the useless departments of โ€œwhateverโ€, created by the years and years of horsetrading, pork barrel b.s. and their pet projects and full employment program democraps and give them a severance check. This will show how much excess fat can be trimmed and lay off non essential employees/swamp dwellers, default on foreign debt and defund all external money flows and that rest of the world would beg on their knees. You sit outside the US, I assume from previous comments and poke holes in everything itโ€™s duly elected President does yet have no sin?. What is that โ€œhe who hath no sin, cast the first stone.. blah, blah. โ€œ?
