So let me home school you - online!
If there were only 2 ICU beds in the entire Metroplex and only 1 of them was full, that would mean that you were only at 50% capacity. Sound great! We are at 50% and ready to take on more!
No! That's just plain stupid, right?!?!?
Unless you know what the total number of ICU beds are, throwing a percentage means NOTHING!
If there is a total of 525 ICU slots available in the DFW area and 64% are currently in use, then that leaves just 189 slots available for any new patients that require that level of care. You know, like patients that have had a heart attack, are sever burn victims, victims of car accidents, shootings, etc, etc, etc... ALONG with any new Covid-19 patients that will require that level of care.
All those other medical issues are not on pause during this Covid crisis! And most of these types of patients don't just spend a day or two in ICU, so capacity is gobbled up VERY quickly.
