I remember many many years ago when Monsanto convinced many African countries to import and plant GM Corn. A year or two latter they banned all imports of Monsanto's corn seeds because when the farmers tried to plant the kernels from the GM corn, they would not germinate. These GM corn kernels were totally sterile.

They would need to buy more GM corn seeds to plant the following years crop. This was totally unaceptable to the local population, who were mostly subsistence farmers. Riots erupted in several African countries and very soon they banned Monsanto seeds.

Agreed 100%. And it was implemented using a loophole that allows the president to impose a tariff for a threat to “national security” without having to go through Congress.

Nobody wins a trade war. There have been dozens of studies on this. Either his economic advisors aren’t very well read or (more likely) he didn’t ask or heed their advice.
