Reading plays is an acquired taste, but, unlike minimalist Harold Pinter, I have included a lot of stage directions, so it's almost like reading fiction, EXCEPT that the reader does NOT have access to what the characters are thinking.
In stagecraft, everything is filtered through how the characters act, their body language, and facial expressions (exaggerated so that it plays to the back of the house) not what he/she thinks. Most of what one finds out about characters is through their stage (exterior) actions, which sometimes contradicts the character's essence.
Makes actual playgoing an interesting experience.
In literary circles, this is called the "Objective Point of View" or "Camera" view.
I realize that playing reading isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's free to try (if you're curious).
