Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

A TLD that consists of purely defensive registrations is dead :ghost:
If it is not used, advertised and embraced by end users, then it's like it doesn't exist and that isn't good for you.
I didn't say that all TELs were defensive. I said that if they were, they would be better than using MySpace as suggested by Acroplex. It is always better to own the domain that one is promoting.

As for end users using TEL, there are plenty of examples.

For example, Deutsche Telekom, A.K.A. T-Com or T-Mobile, registered both telecom.tel & telekom.tel and have set them up with links back to telekom.com. Sure, those are defensive, as are their other Tel domains yellowpages.tel & gelbeseiten.tel. What is not a defensive registration is the domain reisen.tel. Telekom registered reisen.tel too. Reisen means "travel" in German and has absolutely nothing to do with Telekom's core business: landline and mobile phone services. That kind of looks like an end user getting into domaining to me. :)

If TEL is good enough for Telekom, it is good enough for me.

Soon, .tel will work on every mobile phone, internet-enabled or otherwise; in any case, the way technology has been advancing, soon enough all (or most) new mobiles will be internet-enabled and used in that way. Consumers will enjoy a bundling of internet services that will make internet on the go very cheap and accessible to just about everyone.

I'm thinking longer term, not today.

Shortcodes today, .tel tomorrow (and not too far into tomorrow).

;)

That's so true. It's certainly not hard to see that everyone with a mobile will have access to internet soon and that's where .tel will be a killer domain. You have to think long term with this one, it's not your regular tld that's for sure. The new revolution is underway and it will finally spell the end to complicated long telephone numbers as we see them today. Will be a trip down memory lane if we could see these posts in a few years time.

.tel SEO methodology

Steven said:
I've talked to a Google analyst, and .info will rank just as well as the other gTLDs.
It's about the contents and many other optimization methods.

You've gotten some keywords on Google pages, but they're not top keywords. Unfortunately, the ones that I've checked don't have any searches per month on overture and Google.

Thanks Steven.

The matter of 'Top Level Domain' extensions can stand to be debated. Of course, Google will never openly admit to how they assign SEO results per TLD.

As for .TEL keywords, I've targeted certain keywords due to recent trend analysis per Google Insight tool.

Lastly, concerning .TEL rankings, I am using my own method of web 2.0 optimization which focuses on syndicating content, namely through web 2.0 technology.

Fortunately, all my domains are moving up & not down in rankings.

Thanks,
Dave

I just hope that telnic will provide more tools and ways for the developers to optimize their .tel sites well on the search engines.
I wish you the best wish your dev and optimization. :)

Agree completely. I don't know about America, but internet use on the mobile is becoming the norm here in London. I access it pretty frequently most days.

Dottel only search engine

It Is very important to have a dottel only search engine which only indexes .tel domains. People who just want to search contact information search from dottel only search engine. Hopefully Google can do this kind of search engine. because .tel is unique for contact information, In many situations, people search a term just for contact information, like phone number, address etc

Telnic are working on telpages.com, I'm working on my own, and I'm sure other aspiring developers are too. It's still early days, but I think there will be an explosion of new .tel related services later on in the year.

The train is leaving the station, with or without Google.

Here is a great video about what the DOT TEL is all about...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB3j7J5MU6o

.
I like the idea of dot tel, even my brother who deals in international business was impressed by the ease of simple setup/no hosting fees/and the all in one contact aspect was nice....
email addresses change, phones numbers change, sometimes website addresses change...
if you change companies/ or companies change their own name..cough...AIG...cough.....the dot tel is always there...

I agree with your observations and analogy Plaggypig that in biological terms .tel (and the DNS) is similar to the spinal cord, helping to deliver information fast to and from both the right side (mobile devices) and the left side (web) of the body (the Internet)…. The analogy of .tels with the spinal cord might help Telnic to explain better to the public what .tel is all about.

At the same time that I was also considering this spinal cord analogy last month, I was also thinking that there is a second level of explaining .tel in biological terms at the genetic level…. To make it simple, if anybody thinks of any meaningful digital info (web sites like .com, .org or contact info) as being similar to genetic info (genes) from the genome, the digital equivalent of the biological mechanisms needed to locate and assist genes in becoming functional would be powerful tools like .tels and browsers- in this respect when you consider .tels and .tel search applications as a whole they are a lot more functionally similar to browsers, and less similar to regular web sites like .com, etc …. Just like complex biological systems containing information evolve, so will .tel as a whole. When you consider each .tel individually they appear to convey very simple information, but when you consider them as a whole together with their applications, the emerging body of information has the potential to evolve functionally into a very complex system of unprecedented usefulness.

Just wanted to comment on this point specifically, since it is factually incorrect.

The brilliance behind .tel is that contact information gets stored directly in the DNS. So when client applications wish to retrieve data, they don't have to go all the way over the web to get it, but instead just pull it from their local DNS resolver. This has huge implications for users on mobile networks in particular, since they are inherently latent. It's all about tactile responsiveness - absolutely critical for browsing through directory tree structures.

In terms of the web we're talking about something like a second (or several), but for .tel we're on the millisecond scale. It may not seem like it, but it's a huge difference.

Then there is the issue of availability - what if your web server gets bogged down by requests, or drops offline completely? We don't have to worry about that with .tel - it sits atop the most distributed and balanced network in the world.

One of my favourite .tel quotes is, "Its as if we’re at the stage where we’re learning that to perform certain important acts the signal doesn’t have to go all the way to the brain and back but can operate by way of the much faster reflexes that only touch the spinal cord."

Think of DNS like the central nervous system in your body, and a superior alien being has attached a .tel implant to your spinal cord that gives you super internet powers: you are Superbook Man der derr der derrrrr.

So anyway just remember, .tel is not the web. The internet is more than the web, and it is connectedness that matters.

Stefan - absolutely, love the genome analogy. Well structured and connected information becomes far more valuable than the sum of its parts.
