Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

A friend and I bought one, beach.tel

Hopefully it will work out, .tel has a good idea.
Would it be safe to say that this was a landrush grab and not GA?

I asked some IT people for criticism of my .tel sites, and I thought one made a good point: currently .tel domains making links only to .com and .org pages don't yet take full advantage of the direct DNS access aspect of .tels, which remains its strongest feature, both in terms of speed and approach.

Meaning if you put a link on your pizza.tel to let's say johnspizza.com, people should be aware that a person not using a browser can access only the contact info on .tel, not on the .com.... Alternatively, you can link pizza.tel to both johnspizza.com and johnspizza.tel (therefore you don't have to make any changes in the directory other than the listing of their sites, so if they want to change their information they make the changes). Alternatively if johnspizza doesn't have a .tel you might want to charge johnspizza more to add their contact information on the .tel directory or for any changes that they want to make to their info in your pizza.tel . This allows directory listingss of both businesses that have .tel and more primitive ones that don't have .tel

Even though this is only the beginning of the .tel epic, I think that people designing .tel sites and people using them should start to clearly make a distinction between information that is directly accessible from the DNS (actually .tels has info available from both DNS and browser), and the info that is accessible only through browsers (.com and the other hundred extensions out there).

Am I making any sense here or am I smoking something again? What I am trying to say is that it might be a good idea to try to make as much info on your .tel sites "direct dns compatible" (as opposed to "browser only compatible"), and just to be aware that any link to .coms, etc have the limitations characteristic of the pre-.tel era. I am sure that most people on this forum were aware of this thing, but slower people like myself and possibly a larger part of the public will need in the beginning to have basic things like this explained clearly, either by Telnic or by other .tel users....

stefanb,

I completely agree. I feel some standards should be set (tel owners could opt in) for tel listings. To provide each user a familar feel to everyEven as simple as stating for <mobile browsing> and <standard> (web browsing) on the link connections. However I feel it would take time for clients who list to actually have there own .tel .

Some people have not even had a website so persuading them to pay for a tech
that has just come out may take some time.

commercial, automated telephone messaging directories utilizing VUI (voice user interface) for bill payments and call routing ARE DEAD

i just wanted to make that announcement. call me a futurist, if you will.

"thank you for calling GIANT Corporation. This call may be monitored, for quality assurance."

"please say or enter your 6 digit policy number followed by the pound sign"

"you entered 837272, is this correct?"

"I'm sorry, I didn't get that. please say or enter your 6 digit policy number ... "

"you entered 837272, is this correct?"

"I'm sorry, I didnt get that. please say or enter...."

"to return to the main menu please press 1 ... "

... 5 minutes and 20 elevated points in blood pressure later ....

"I'm sorry, I didn't get that. To return to the main menu press 1, to hear more options ...."

I'm sorry folks, this is far from the future. It will be a hackneyed joke for every hack stand-up comedian five years from now. "remember those stupid voice automated telephone systems from the '00s? Gosh .. they sucked! (audience - ahahahah!)

I'm not saying .tel will definitely be the one to fill these poor hobo shoes, but hey, imagine just for a moment, as I'd like to right now, while my blood pressure slowly cools back to normal, that I could simply pick up my mobile phone, enter giantcorporation.tel, and within a few simple clicks, (without having to be degraded by some ridiculous substitute for personal human interaction) I could be directed to the exact department/option that I need to get to to do what i need to do, without having to waste my damn time and give me a headache on my otherwise pleasant Saturday afternoon.

In my mind, there's a gaping hole there just waiting for the right new technology to soccer punt this ridiculous voice-automated relic back into the 20th century.

I don't understand your answer. What do you mean by ".tel is totally different". You write "you can register trademarks as you wish" : is that mean that I can register any trademark available without any problem ?

No, the answer should be obvious.

Trademarks cannot be used in any tld. A company put much money and effort to protect a trademark. How could someone steal that work.

Because trademark infringement is like stealing in some form.

I said NOT at the end. I guess I was not clear.

He also wrote "NOT." at the end.

You can't register TM names in any extension.

What else are you going to do with .TEL? It isn't like you can develop it. It is meant to share contact info within a rigid format. It is by it's nature a directory.

I can see a few premium .tel selling to end users, and as far as I am concerned that is the only realistic way to monetize it. Sell a .TEL for more than you paid. The massive directories and subdomains people have talked about are not gonna happen.

Brad

Look, it's pretty insane of you to say that no one will pay for a directory listing. It's possible that many will... to some businesses, they are just happy to get their name out there (as basic as this sounds- you wouldnt believe how much money is wasted on advertising and some will happily pay you for the concept of what a dot tel might do, without having to see proof yet). If they havent had an internet presence or if they do on a YP directory already, once you even show them how the .tel works and what it does. I can guarantee there will be some buisness owners who will happily pay a few dollars a month to be in a directory on a .tel... sure, many wont until they can see it is ranked well in google for example and get some instant ROI, but some will just like the concept anyway even without high rankings yet or any proof of click throughs etc. This might sound stupid, but many businesses do waste an incredible amount on advertising they dont even measure. Im not saying this to go out and rip them off by convincing them into a .tel directory, not at all, but what i would be selling them is the potential of a .tel at this point.
No one really knows how well it will rank for seo yet, it's still early days.. but, Ive seen one already that has been optimised by someone with a .tel vip account, they got into 4th position on 1st page of google with 486,000 other websites associated with that name (and Im talking actually typing the name into google by itself without .tel attached) and it's still there!. So with enough backlinks created and enough updated keywords and data stored in a .tel directory, 1st page ranking may be very likely with a .tel depending on the niche.
This is talking about directories alone, you tend to focus on this one aspect of .tel when it's not even the only way to monetise it, yet it could be very successful anyway without question!
To say though that a directory service is a waste of time, is a waste of time... you'd be best to go off and bash .mobi or something similar website extension aiming to compete directly with .com that is less likely to be a success.
:bingo:
P.S. sorry for getting off showcase a little... to stay on topic, I recently got shelves.tel and shelving.tel, might make for a nice DIRECTORY and if it doesn't, then someone selling shelves (or shelving) might like this as their .tel! Either way it has potential IMHO

Totally agree with you phase 111, this was already explain many many time on this forum. Bmugford should browse forum first before saying things that I'm tired to read it again and /or answer again. Domainers like bmugford must be educate first about dot tel, marketing, advertising... Oh my god!

How can you explain that even yellowpages is up and famous, business owners list their website all around the net in directories even ready to pay for? We call that advertising, presence,..... If everyone were thinking like you so no other directories will exist only YP. That's not the case.

Post the name, or it doesn't exist.

Is it a keyword nobody searches for?

Directory business is saturated.
We're talking hundreds, if not thousands of established directories out there...
Directory business scripts have advanced over the years, and nowadays, there are directory scripts with incredible features.
Unfortunately, you need to use your own host to install the script and parse out the programming in web format.
