Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Ask Nissan about Nissan.com which they still do not own after millions and millions pursuing it.

If you have a term that is a dual use, then you are fine as long as you don't infringe on their TM.

Even Apple.tel would be fine to own if it was used to promote apple picking locations or something.

If it is a made on term like Pepsi.tel forget about it.

I actually dont see any hassles regarding a trademark name providing it is a surname you are maybe turning into a directory or it is a name that has an alternative meaning. If you set up a site promoting the alternative meaning and have a link on your .tel to that site, I think the company trying to get the name from you may lose the case. If you promote something similar to what the trademarked name holder sells as well, then you will lose 99% of the time IMO.

I wonder if we could get a quick reality check from some of the pro's here. Many of us are hopeful that we can build profitable specialist directories. It's a very tough sell, of course, particularly in the early days when nobody's heard of a .tel.

1) Is there at present ANY way to prove to an advertiser that their website was visited by a click-through from my .tel? Or that his phone rang through from my .tel? I presume not. (Well, a proxy phone number for each listing....NOT!)

The client's website can have a script that detects where the visitors are coming from (also google analytics).

I don't think there's any way to know that the phone rang through a .tel site.
It's extremely simple to add the phone calling feature using any tld website.

2) Is there even any way to prove to a potential advertiser how many visits my .tel gets?

Not really unless telnic implements some sort of a tracking script.

3) Is there any way to collect a micro-payment from the visitor to my .tel when he clicks a phone number or website? (One of my .tel's has adult aspects...)

Not unless you can add some script lines into your website.

4) We're not going to get footsoldiers to pound the streets in each of a couple hundred cities. I'd have thought there were specialist companies who make a business of selling web-directory advertising, but I've googled the heck out of it and can't find a hint of one. (OK, I'm green & stupid, but a few others here might be too, so I ask for all of us!)

There is a saturation on web directory type sites.
Furthermore, there are already established yellowpages site and niche (city/geo websites with yellowpages) directory sites.

Assuming the answers to all the above are negative, is there any dream that some enterprising developer will find work-arounds to these issues, or is the .tel structure such that this would be technologically impossible? No point living with false hopes!

Thanks, mates! You're a fascinating bunch, truly!

.tel is a contact page. I don't think development is possible.
You're given the features of whatever telnic decides to give you.

It's good for a personal use (I still don't see why when you can just create a contact page on your own website.).

My understanding is that Telnic wants (for obvious reasons) each individual and business to have their own unique .TEL domain.

This entire sub-folder / lease scheme will not work under the current rigid infrastructure for numerous reasons and Telnic has no motivation to help registrants pool users (aka potential .TEL registrants) into a single domain configured with sub domains/folders. IMO.

Proxy links, proxy numbers (you can lease them for about $1 /month and just include the cost in the listing fee and/or charge per click/call). Personally I'm going to have advertisers bid against each other on a CTC (Click To Connect) basis, and just lease virtual numbers where appropriate for the directory.

It may be possible to obatain logs from the web proxy in the future, but this would just be a sample of total traffic, since it wouldn't include "hits" by client applications on mobile devices, that pull records straight out of DNS.

At the end of the day connections and sales are the only thing that really matter anyway.

You could use an SMS short code or premium rate phone number.

I have some ideas but I'll leave this up to others to discuss for now.

I am waiting to see *real world* monetization of .tel domains ie directories that actually get visits and have paid advertisers. Good luck with that.
Happy flipping y'all :D

Now that's a good fit with the TLD! .TEL would be a great option for drug dealers who simply need a page that has their most up-to-date contact info.

Also good for prostitutes, assassins and other jobs where contact details can change frequently. I'm off to see what's still available!

Guys, i think all the people who got in early and got any good .tels will be laughing all the way to the bank in years to come. I dont think many people realise how big .tel will be. It will become the norm for society to have a .tel. Its as simple as that. Ive got mine and im happy. Wait till the general public catch on, its gunna be bigger than ben hur!

Seriously, this has been the best opportunity in years !!!
