Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

So Jeff, you never seem to post (ever!) about what names you have bought, or own (if any), but you always have such opinionated comments on what others buy, or buy into!! So, after all your 'highly brandable .tel' hyping, and doing your 'diligent research, and using cautionary care', as you recommend others do, what .tels did you register??

Or will this be another 'only your opinions and comments' to what others reg or don't, and no actual personal investing in extension too?? :guilty:

So, come on, share with us your domaining experience and which 'highly brandable .tel' regs you went after and got!

We were right about those other extensions but that's for those threads...
:bah:

RJ is right - the only thing these are good for are personal sites, flipping or directories. Flipping for profits imo will on the whole only come early like the previous new releases - add in a recession this time and...

As for those hyping how they are going to build these directories and companies will be knocking down their doors - do you own a directory now? What do you base this assumption on? You have to compete against existing directories and websites with traffic. A directory is nothing more than a backlink if it gets no traffic - and there millions of those out there. So that leaves you having to either buy traffic or build traffic. And since you are so utterly restricted on the content end with .tel just how do you build traffic with a hand tied behind your back? Are you ready to invest thousands more and hundreds of hours of time building a brand/traffic? Have you even considered that?

Invest how you like it's your money, but don't expect some of us to shy away from speaking our minds. As others have mentioned we have seen this before. And for you BattleStar nerds - all of this has happened before and will happen again! :gl:

And here almost two days later I'm still waiting for my telhosting account to actually work. Still only one domain was added to it, and I just checked it and it still doesn't resolve. On a basic technical level - major disappointment thus far. Come on .tel I'm giving you a chance here!

Excellent analogy RJ. These .tels are solely for information purposes. I can't understand some of the names registered as you can't provide contact information for them that would entice someone to visit that .tel.

.tel and any other extension is like comparing two different things. In my opinion, geos and names will have the most success. However, good luck to everyone with their investments.

:imho:

In trying to be conservative in my estimates: Would it be fair to say that some percentage above zero will represent the click-through rate to the linked website from earrings.tel? At over 1,000,000 Google searches per month for this exact keyword, it wouldn't require a high percentage type-in rate for a high number of page impressions. Of course, the more popular the TLD the greater the percentage of type-in traffic.

In the past when running an "earrings" Adwords' campaign, I can tell you that even when competing with six or seven more text ads in addition to Google's actual top search results, I would often max out my CPC daily budget.

With earrings.tel, there is only one click through option. So the question is whether a strong likelihood exists that during the course of a year I will receive at least twenty click-throughs (equal to a min. $20 spent with Adwords at an approx. CPC of $1). I suspect I will, and with the addition of "call to action" copy that incorporates a changing limited time offer, perhaps the response will be even better.

From this vantage point, it looks like a pretty safe marketing strategy to me. I'd appreciate comments or observations.

I can see this strategy coming to fruition. Say, for example:

gold.earrings.tel
hoop.earrings.tel

Add links to the .tel's to draw traffic to a particular domain. If done correctly, I 100% agree it could work.

:)

Yes, but if i give someone that user/pass, he (or she) will be able to manage all of my .tel domains registered with that registar. I bought a .tel for my girlfriend, and i would like to give her control over it, without giving her control over other .tels..

Oh I see what you mean, then what Marco mentioned would
probably be your best bet.

Thanks for the feedback. Sometimes I feel like I must be missing something, so it's good to know when I'm moving in the right direction. :-/

Subdomains won't work. This extension is about short and sweet. IMO.

Been 36 hours now, and still my registered .tels are not active in my .tel account...

C'mon .tel....can you move this along, please?

______________________________________________________

Just thinking about how to use .tels...

I have a (small) handful of .tels....What I'm thinking about is how exactly to use them - and, how a business/revenue model may look.

For me, .tel needs to be more than just a link farm, or a basic personal contact diary.

If you create a Directory, for example (either Geo, or Business), then, two things:

(i) By definition, a visitor to your .tel would click through, and then be taken away from your .tel site to the site they ultimately are interested in. So, you are basically an intro agent for someone else's business.....And, you lose the visitor from your .tel site without making money.

(ii) The only way to make money would be if your Directory .tel was marketed so brilliantly that you had great traffic, and could prove to businesses listed in your .tel Directory that you could deliver a lot of traffic to their particular business. Then they may pay you to be listed...But, that's tough.

Or, maybe, you could get intro deals, business by listed business....That's going to be hard to build up.

On the social networking app....

.tel would work wonderfully for this IF visitors could create personal sub-sectors within YOUR .tel domain, with their own username & password access etc (without access to your domain control account)...It would open .tel up to potentially be a Twitter, or such like.

So, with iMeet.tel (which I have), I could build/promote a .tel, as a genuine community, where people can access each other's details/interests, and expect to meet/find lots of other people with like-minded interests etc (be even better with some upload pic features etc) - ie a real social networking community (and the mobile element would be a real plus here).

But, for this to work someone needs to be able to come to iMeet.tel, create a sub-sector within iMeet.tel, themselves, called, say, Susie.iMeet.tel, with her own password/username access, and, then publish her profile of interests/contact details etc.....And, Susie's access would have to be separate, within my .tel account, from my control of the main domain account.

As membership grows, iMeet.tel could be monetised.

But, I can't see how to do this as it is currently set up. Independent visitor access to create a sub-category within the main domain (without access to the main domain account, which includes my other registered .tels) seems to be the problem.

Any thoughts?

.

It's too early in the game to be registering 'I' names.

Plus, overly generic names are a big negative due to the inherent limitations of the TLD. I believe this extension is best suited for concentrated contact information related to an individual, business, or specific geographical area.

I really wonder how google will treat this extension.
I have cranston.tel.
If it takes an act of congress to get it to rank in top 10 for "cranston", then I'll have no choice but to kick cranston.tel to the curb.
So really, does it come to how search engine friendly this extension is?
Are the search engines the only avenue for this extension or will people get to the point where they automatically type in a geodomain.tel when looking for something there?
If it's straight search engines, that would suck!
