For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Dynadot I am seriously disappointed.

Of all the people who back ordered a somewhat rare first name, at least give it to someone who has that first name. I would have been completely fine with that, but yeah... thanks for selling my name to an Asian in Hong Kong, because that completely makes sense with this extension. Especially since they had to go through these one by one and assign them to accounts.

The fact that you think a domain name, or any type of private property, would be more useful to you than to somebody else doesn't entitle you to it more than others. Just imagine what the world would be like if the law on property rights was like that. In fact, its this type of reasoning that causes people to feel like they are entitled to a domain when they want to build it, and it should be given to them from the owner who has put up the money to buy it earlier. :td:

Dynadot had clearly stated on this page before the launch that "There may be more than one customer trying to pre-order the same domain as you. If Dynadot gets the domain, it will be randomly assigned to one of the pre-orders. For example, if there are 10 pre-orders for a domain, each pre-order will have a 1 in 10 chance of getting the domain."

Assigning the name at random is the fair way to do it, if Dynadot is opting to allow multiple people to preorder a domain on their site. If Dynadot's staff went in and manually gave you the domain just because that was your name, I would think it would be in fact unjust to the others who had paid the same price as you to backorder the name. :imho: this is not a valid reason for you, or others to avoid Dynadot, just because you were too angry about not getting a domain you wanted.

This is not a personal attack on you, and I can understand the frustration of not getting a name that's so special to you (a personal name), but we as professional domain investors should not use the same faulty reasoning that the general public uses against our industry.

Go ahead and make an offer to purchase the name from the owner if you are so inclined.

No, we have different names... but the same guy in HK got your name! If anyone else pre-ordered a first name at Dynadot and did not get it, please check the whois and see who the owner is.

For those of you who still doubt the power and advantages of .tel check out vaccines.tel
Compare the vaccines.tel with any phone book listing or any other dot com or dot org or whatever else is out there on the subject in terms of speed, usefulness of content, organization and everything else. I worked on vaccines.tel for just a few hours today, so do not doubt that .tel is a very powerful tool. It will probably take a little more work to make vaccines.tel into a more comprehensive global directory, but hopefully you can clearly see the potential & that it will soon become a very useful & practical site. Alternatively type in any browser including Google the word "vaccines" and try to make sense of the information there, try to distinguish bs from fact....
All that I am saying is that if you add a little integrity to the development of .tels you will have an amazing tool on your hands- and people would have to be real boneheads not to appreciate it soon...

I can appreciate the work you've put into the directory, but to be completely honest, the primary source I refer to regarding vaccines is my doctor, not the internet.

All that I am saying is that if you add a little integrity to the development of .tels you will have an amazing tool on your hands- and people would have to be real boneheads not to appreciate it soon...

The advantage to .tel is the ease of getting content up so I think we'll see a lot of sites going live. Whether or not they are actually used by the public remains to be seen. A lot needs to be discovered yet about search ranking and direct navigation remains to be seen without marketing to drive it.

I hope the speculations on .tel work out for people, but will be interesting to watch the landrush drops in 3 years.

trouble is, not every one will use their .tel right.
I went to lowell.tel and expected to find info on lowell, ma. there, instead it's some guy's name.
What a waste!

If I was on my mobile looking up lowell.tel to find the number for city hall, I would've been disappointed in finding it's actually about "Lowell the horse trainer".

look at houston.tel.
It's parked.
Too much of that will hurt the extension bad.

That is quite interesting and something i hadnt thought of. Cellular phone networks could easily offer third level domains to their customers, say for example, mike.verizon.tel, james.sprint.tel, lonelygirl15.cingular.tel, and so on ...

Thats a huge market when you think about it. I still get paper statements from my wireless provider, and its always crammed with some color inserts for this or that special offer. Its not hard to image one that will say "sign up now for your personal name.verizon.tel for only $1.95/month!"

.. or potentially just add it in free with their package. "sign up for AT&Ts new social mobility package (tm) and receive your unique .tel identity, free!"

either way it would be marketed to smithereens.

Once a major cellular carrier in the United States begins giving away .tel subdomains free, interest in .tel will accelerate.

It's amazing when you visit a bunch of .tel's and all they say is "available for lease." Wrong way to go about it from a business perspective

Took the words out of my mouth, I'm very curious how people hope to earn $$ from these domains aside from speculative resale. I have two .tel's, one for personal use and one for a business I have, both are going to be used as intended, providing contact info. Best wishes to everyone with your .tel registrations.

you will see me in the whois on all the decent $300 landrush drops in 2012.... i'll be registering them for around $8ea then. :lol:

I grabbed illinois (.) tel during the second phase. It was the highest populated state that was unreg'd when I finally convinced myself to take a chance and register one for the $300 fee (ouch). One was enough for me in that phase though.

Thinking a yellowpages type phonebook for these first 4. I kind of like the ePages and iPages best out of them.

I really wish I had remembered when the .tel's were opening up for the cheaper price. I would've grabbed some better ones for the place I work and for myself. Instead I forgot (woops) and was a day late...

yes great for a personal online contact site but i think a normal website looks better
