Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

I guess this s the risky part of .tel just now. Alsthough i predict mass appeal for this at some time, the question is when. Business will be most likely to start to benefit from .tel and the general public after that. I got a couple common names inc my own. The other name was just for a punt that someone will want to pay more for it because of the vanity factor as ms domainer says. if it's a really good popular first name, I might grab it esp. if my son had that name, , you'd want to be sure it's popular enough for someone to want to register within landrush and this can be a tough call.

If it's a popular name, it will likely be gone soon and before general availability; if it's not, it may or may not be available at GA.

Just ask yourself:

Is the name important for you to have?

Is it a high search name?

Do you have the spare $300.00 to spend?

If, after buying it, you change your mind, do you think you could flip it for at least what you paid for it?

Just some pros and cons to consider.

When people say GEO's are good .tel investements, what are your thoughts on which are the best options, taking into account, it wont be just tourists or travelers using this .tel services, but the locals too I presume??

Cities

Large population, like Shaghai, NY, Sao Paulo etc
Capital Cities, Madrid, Budapest, Vienna, Dublin
Tourist Cities, Orlando etc

Countries

Obviously big countries are good (US< UK, Germany, France etc), but what about lesser known countries like Belarus, Iceland, Latvia etc

States/Counties Popular Tourist states like Florida, California
Are less tourisy states like Wyoming, Maine, Idaho good investments

your thought are appreciated?? I guess it depends on the reseller market in a few years time??

Ideally, I think good cities are better than states... for example, I personally would rather buy los angeles than california as a domain, though of course both would be great to have

Yes it is popular and short US, English name.
OK thanks for many advices and here is my decision, I like better to spend that $300 for a good dot com later. So there is a high risk that it will be reg before General, if there is a savvy domainer with that name, I sure he'll reg it, but if m lucky, will get for 20 $
Also I think that until he get over 20 (+10 years from now) with a job, there should come out many more dot extention with new features (new technology) and .tel will be old fashion but if it becomes like .com more valuable than now then, agrrrr..

All (cities, country, state) worldwide are good if population count at least 300 000 people, have internet access, have language that match telnic management.
If I own one of them I'll be really glad to have it especially if it s my location. I own T A H I T I . tel and I'm very very happy because all Tahiti tlds are reg and their owner ask for thousand. Also Tahiti .com had an offer for us$200 000 in the past but owner did not sell it.

Thanks steveteva

Surely Telnic will be having languages to match most countries. Anyone know what languages will be available, besides the obvious ones??

Go to .tel applications and click on a device...Each one is a little different... This is probably outdated already though.... Justin mentioned somewhere on this thread that currently there are 9 languages supported... and they are working on adding more..

I found this video pretty interesting.

Justin Hayward of Telnic was asked in September 2008 if Justin.tel was already taken and he said 'no' even though it was already a live .tel page and also embroidered on the back of this shirt (1:15 to 2:25 in video).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWm49Dogw_k

These types of responses although perhaps technically truthful make me hesitant to take anything he says without a bit of skepticism.

Hi MicroGuy,

We have retained some names for the purposes of demonstration and conducting business but most of these are being released for Sunrise/Landrush applications. You'll notice that some of the domains that were live - including hotels.tel for example - are no longer as were released as people applied for them. At the time of the video, our reserve list had not been defined. Sorry if you feel that I was being misleading but that statement was true at the time of recording!

It is OK for territories or states (e.g. Tahiti, Nevada, Kerala), but remember that country names - small or big - were anyway reserved from the start, so they cannot be bought or sold (Macedonia was reserved both under Macedonia and its "official" FYROM name). One of the only exception was Korea, due to the fact that there are two Koreas, and each was reserved by the registry under its official name. Switzerland was reserved in all three official languages plus English. Etc...
But the adjectives were not reserved: german.tel or french.tel were available.
Re your question: I would feel that city names are especially relevant.

You're right, most countries if not all have been taken but there are so many U.S cities that there is still lot available, it's not really worth unless it's famous or big cities like palm beach, las vegas, atlanta... but they are all gone in sunrise or first day of landrush. Small cities might be for domainers that lives there and want to have a part of his city as virtual. But General reg. will save money rather than landrush unless you want it.

Yes I managed to get a name that was in use at one point too and now isnt, was surprised and delighted to say the least. Just goes to show though how misunderstandings can happen that arent warranted...Ive found Justin to be 100% helpful, genuine and honest thus far, but I guess naysayers often look for negatives...great response Justin. :imho:

When you're getting banged in the head, you don't have to look too far.
