So what are your conclusions for dot tel? It will get minimal URL address type-in traffic because it is a minor extension, so that even in highly sought after words the type-in will rarely include .tel as the TLD?
And as it is not a .com there is no hope for SEO?
Is this what you are saying?
I don't know how SEO is going to shake-out for .tel, but I wouldn't rely on it. To be in the first three pages of Google results requires that you place in the top 30. With huge page competition for one and two premium keyword searches, that's not going to be easy. It's possible that Google could carve out a separate "contact" classification for .tel search results like it does for phone number and address searches. That could make a difference, but it's purely speculative at this point.
However, I do believe that for .tel premium keywords with tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of exact monthly searches, a very small percentage of direct navigation traffic could amount to a reasonable visitor count. The more popular the TLD becomes, the greater the likelihood that people will type .tel after a keyword or phrase. But once a visitor lands on a .tel page, you must be able to keep his or her interest or the whole exercise is moot. Offering an exclusive limited time offer that can be redeemed only by clicking on the website link in your .tel page may be one way to deal with this issue.
GAME CHANGER
IMHO, the primary benefit is that .tel offers the potential for one-click calling by simply entering the domain in a .tel enabled application or mobile device. That alone sets .tel apart from all other TLDs.
If 1-800-DENTIST and 1-800-FLOWERS can make money, then a sound business model should exist for .tel monetization through live or automated call center directories. The technology that drives this class of directory will only become more user friendly and efficient with on-going advances in AI and voice recognition technology.
To see the current possibilities now available, do a search for "call centers" and outsourcing. There are plenty of contract based services to consider if the right deal can be worked out.
