For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

There is no realistic way to monetize these outside of flipping. You can't develop them. And no, filling out a profile doesn't fall under development as some here have actually called it.

While you could in theory use the profiles as directories and sell placements, .tel isn't meant for this so there are severe limitations that cripple this model. If you want to build a directory, do so from any other TLD and host it yourself if only for the simple ability of having unlimited listing and ad spots to sell. Only a total newbie would even think about doing this from a .tel profile.

I didn't realize there were limitations on the number of listings for a .tel, I thought if a company owned their .tel they could have all of the geographic locations as well as functional listings, i.e. departments under their .tel listing. Do you know what the limits are?

Does anyone know if it is possible to create email addresses with our .tel domains ??
I can't seem to find any information if this is possible or not ( which is why I guess its probably something that is not currently possible ).

Please contact with your .tel service provider to check whether an email offering is available and to have the relevant domain settings (i.e. MX records) configured on your behalf. Please note that over the coming months Telnic will also be providing direct support within the TelHosting application for users to connect their own choice of email to .tel domains."

I might add some restaurants (if not all of them; be a pain, though)
Need to look on an iphone to see how it looks.
Trying to find all that info was difficult. People will appreciate the centralized location of contact info cranston.tel offers.

Here's my proposal for a standard .Tel contact page with a "popunder" website from a second URL, TelTowing.com. You'll see that I have also added a logo to the .Tel contact page:

In order to launch the primary .Tel contact page and secondary popunder website simultaneously, Telnic would need to add a preference for auto launching a second URL. The second URL could be anything from a business website, like the example images, to a personal MySpace or Facebook website. For people who buy their .Tel domain through MySpace, that would probably be an excellent fit.

Since Telnic looks in on this thread quite often, I wanted to get opinions on adding this capability.

Would this be helpful? If it would be, I think it's important to let Telnic know. If there's not much response, there would be little reason for Telnic to consider it.

.tel should follow .mp steps

With .mp, you can use feeds from blogs, twittter, websites, and you can import contacts (many at once) in vcard format and download them.

You would need to keep the directory simple, I noticed that restaurants was not listed, The city geo's I have will be simple directory of businesses that want to be in it, Start with a free month to show them off, then either have them pay to stay listed nearer the first directory,first page of site, or hide'm w/privacy till they pay... I.E. yoursite.tel / restaurants / thebusinessthatpays (is at the top-the first listing) or have their listing as premium as being listed ON the actual restaurant page in on of the paragraphs...I'm still working on the best method...any other thoughts out there?

It's a great idea, and I'd be all for that.

However, you would want to make sure that the popunder or page would be mobile-compliant or develop some kind of software command that would automatically reformat the page to a mobile compliant page.

Also, Telnic might have some spamming issues and would probably want to place some restrictions on what could go on that page.

I own top 5 U.S. cities for apartment rentals:
NYCapartments.tel...... (I've already post it in tel showcase) but here is a DEMO

Go to sandiegoapartments.tel (with your mobile phone like iphone will be better)
1. Click For Rent (will rename later to rentals as was testing)
2. Tall Tower
Now you see description of apartment with price...
Also click link (Site web) Photos
then click link Back to sandiegoapartments
Also Geo location gives actual location of apartment.

Interesting idea, but it seems like you are trying to force a square peg through a round whole.

The .tel is just for simple contact info. Anything more than that, even directories would be better off using another extension.

Once you go beyond offering quick and easy contact info, then the .tel does not make sense. Imho it would be much easier to develop and market SanDiegoApartments.com then to try and pull the same thing off with the .tel that was never meant for that use.

You're definitely on the right track. If you're in San Diego, on the go with your mobile phone, and looking for an apartment, you might look for this exact term.

Your money page, of course, would be a dot com (or other TLD) site.

Also as a real estate agent I can show people with my iphone apartments for rent. Plus: no database, easy to manage on the fly.

I mis-spoke there. From what I understand there can be a lot of listings, but you are limited in their display.

But I'll say this again, no real developer on any level is talking about using .tel profiles in the manner being discussed in this thread. No offense, but I'm thinking you guys have a limited ability to build sites and are looking for an easy way to develop an online business. Trust me when I tell you that this is not it.

Hire someone to modify an open source directory script to fit your specific needs instead. There are a lot of Indians on here, and they work at a reasonable cost if that is what you are concerned over.

My sale of 10 .TELs closed today and the domains have now been transferred to the new owner. I've also confirmed that the new owner now has a third party interested in buying all of the domains.

That's the only viable monetization model (aftermarket resale). IMO.

You have SanDiegloApartments.tel, if you want to offer "jimsmith" a listing than his domain name would be jimsmith.sandiegoapartments.tel. I'm pretty sure Jim smith could find a better name for his business card, JimSmith.tel comes to mind.

If you are looking to just do a directory, than why go with the .tel? It does not make it easier. They way I see it, the .tel is for quick contact info on the go. Using a cumbersome name like SanDiegloApartments.tel and offering listings, is not what the .tel extension is about. That is my two cents anyway, your individual results may vary :hehe:
