Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Just a shot in the dark here but could it possibly be that links/deep links may be to jobs, hotels, real estate, vacations, spas, golf etc in the various states in North America and the countries in South America :?
Sorry...way too broad to be useful. Why not just register Earth.tel and list all the jobs, hotels, etc., etc., available on the planet Earth? If you really wanted to create a directory that huge for some reason, you'd probably give it a brandable name...say, "Google" or "Yahoo" or...

Unless .tel really takes off in between buddy, but hold that thought anyhow. :imho:

there will be huge drops no matter what.

there isnt a new TLD in the world that could "take off" within a few years... and speculators will always drop names especially since a good majority of "the best ones" were registered for a 3 year term.

What do you guys think about about a US state geo tel? Would you prefer a city .tel or a state .tel?

I think we would see the function to control .tel sub-domain very soon. Only if we can create username and password for people who want to lease our sub-domain, it would work.

I am not going to take 5 dollar a year and let the leaser request to change their details 5 times a month.

I could be wrong.. but I dont think you can sub-delegate with that method. You might be able to have a website of your own that they log into and change there and you own a script that changes the records under your username and password for you.

I don't think you are going to be able to do this. this is one of the "hot" areas for discussion.

I think you're going to need to build a system to handle that. (like chader mentioned)

State.tel would be my pick.

i really dont think the world needs another million directories ?

so interesting to see how it all pans out ?

OK, i bought couple of .tels, but didnt have much time to play with registars interface. Is there a way someone could edit specific .tel data, without having to know my registar / hosting password?
(domainmonster)

My login to my .tel is different from my login to my registrar/hosting
(Dynadot)
After I created the initial .tel username/password at the
registrar, I don't have to go through the registrar to login anymore
and any .tel I bought after, automatically goes into the
specific .tel account without me having to log in to the registrar.

It should be separate.

Pretty sure you are not allowed to give control of subdomains to anybody but the original regestering name. You ARE allowed to lease them to make money... but YOU would have to be tho one who enter's/change's contact info.... I think this would be hard for personal .tel's, people would want to be able to change their profiles constantly and I don't think it would be possible to keep up with... or worth it. However I think that business's/services would be possible. Their info is pretty static, and would not need to be changed very often... if at all.... therefore once it's entered into the system it would be pretty smooth sailing in my opinion..

It is critical that sub-delegation does not happen. This is because the big cellular carriers will probably give away for free sub-domains to their customers ie johnny.ais.tel.

However, people want control. This creates the vanity .tel market. If sub-delegation is allowed we are all dead in the water because people will have their vanities (or business for that matter) .tel's free from their carrier. SUB-DELEGATION WOULD DESTROY THE MARKET!!! It is critical to understand this.

Supposedly speaking a cell company could already "lease" out the names. You would just have to call a rep (or software owned by the company) to change the info. As you are allowed to have somebody in your "business unit" to delegate.

I dont think it would hurt all that much. Might even help at least spread the domain visability.

Would you rather have: yourname.tel or yourname.sprint.tel...
Like many things for the casual user they wont care. But for people who dont want their name tied to a carrier they will want to purchase from a registrar or domainer their own names.

I succumbed and actually bought one - Plain.tel

Not going to do anything with it except look for a flip!

Got numbers.tel and forsale.tel.
Both are active with just free links to phone listings for the first, and property/cars for the second.
Any ideas on development would be welcome.

this is exactly why .tel will be a failure IMO and never be like the yellow pages like everyone is thinking. If I am traveling in a city or at home i just open up the yellowpages app on my iphone and it instantly knows my location and I can find anything or I can go to google maps and type in a word such as Pizza and it will show me every pizza place near me with click to dial. If I go to a city.tel domain it might just be loaded with porn links or if i go to pizza.tel how do i know for sure that it will be reliable info? Would you trust a plumber from a link on a plumber.tel domain or from yellowpages.com more? Paper phonebooks are dead but dead because of the internet, mobile web, and iphone apps, not dead because of the .tel domain names. Of course I bought a few .tel domains just incase because you never know but I still think it will never be what people think it will be. Its easy for people to have a site when they dont know how to make one but so is me.tv for the .tv domains and .tv hasnt taken off either. Do people actually think people are going to pay them big money to put a link on a .tel domain that has no traffic and is something they never heard of before?

This is a valid point, it's possible that things may get better as time goes on as .tel's are developed or re sold. Probably a bit of a saving grace might be the telpages which would hopefully keep tabs on the .tel entries and ensure that they are specific and content relevant for particular headings/ categories within telpages.
