.tv The REASONs for TVs Success

A couple of years ago, the NP member michaeldotcom wrote a most interesting collection of ten reasons why he was investing in .TV and why TV would gather speed in the years ahead.

He wrote his piece before all the massive changes in .tv and so I feel I would like to create a 2011 version for the New Year ahead:

In a digital world where every possible extension is possible we need to understand why .TV will be (and is) a contender to capture people’s hearts and minds:

1. The two most recognisable two-letter words in the world are OK and TV

2. TV is used in every language and every culture on the planet, from Andorra and Zimbabwe to the Vatican and North Korea.

3. In a world where short domains are praised, .tv is the shortest TLD available, shorter than .com, .net, .org, .info, .mobi, etc.

4. If big corporations and established businesses have been using .com or local ccTLDs for their main websites, .tv is generally the only other TLD they've been developing websites on

5. Unlike all the other newer TLDs (.mobi, .eu, .asia, etc), .tv is the only one which has been development-driven and not speculation-led. The thousands of great developed sites/channels raise .tv awareness every day.

6. The growth rate of the number of developed .tv sites (+10 to 15% increase in the number of indexed .tv sites each month) as well as the growth rate of the search volume for .tv sites are the highest amongst all TLDs

7. Corporate enduser adoption of TV is now the norm. From Adidas.tv to BMW.tv and beyond, the ‘suits of the world’ now ‘get’ what .TV can do for them.

8. Most big TV networks are developing, using and promoting heavily in new .tv sites for their tv channels and specific tv shows. Be they Five.tv or Oprah WInfrey - .TV is a part of their mix.

9. The online video / internet tv market is booming exponentially and shows NO sign of slowing down - and .tv leads the pack to become the TLD of choice for the world of video, news, entertainment and media.

10. Given the fantastic marketing/advertising/business opportunities that online video offers to companies big and small, the boom in online video commerce and marketing is only set to expand.

11. In a time of global recession the one thing that is last on the list of things to go when having to cut back is their internet connection. You can take the real TV, but you can’t take my Blip.tv!

12 The infrastructure and technology to enable and facilitate internet TV to EVERY man, woman and child in the planet is close to becoming a reality.

13 The generation that are coming of age are the FIRST generation to spend more time watching TV on the internet that on the living room TV.

14. In the metro world, ninety-nine out of every 100 people in the 15 to 25 age group know exactly what .Tv is all about - and have NO hangups about it not being .com

15 The .tv extension is such a powerful and international recognised word that it gives an instant brandability and promotion opportunities.

16. In a world full of confusing new TLDs, companies and users will always turn to what has been established and well-known for years - this is the old trusted TLDs (like .com, .org, .co.uk, .de, etc) as well as TV which has been part of every household for many decades even before the birth of the Internet.

17. The cost of making quality film is now so low that it everyone can enter the market for a few dollars. ‘Shoot and show’ is now so easy, it even comes standard on most new cellphones.

18 The cost of showing film on the internet is lower than it has ever been - while the number of advertisers wanting to share the same space as this film is at an all-time high.

19. The culture of seeing film and televisual media on a .tv channel is now embedded in the psyche of the planet from Brazil to China to Norway.

20. The number of new registrations of .TV names has increased by well over 1000 percent in the last year alone.

21. The new price structure means that, for the first time ever, I can register a .Tv name for the next ten years at less than the price of a .com

LONG LIVE THE REVOLUTION!

If you can add to the reasons, please do so.

Great list of reasons why one might reasonably infer that .tv domains hold speculative value. Wonder when we'll hear from snoops about it?

Before we do let me ask about this-

20. The number of new registrations of .TV names has increased by well over 1000 percent in the last year alone.

Increased 10x from the last 12 months compared to the 12 months previous or when exactly? And, how do you know?

Great list and I think it describes the fact that:

Humans are visually stimulated animals. We can see farther than we can hear, smell, taste etc ... so we've become reliant on visual recognition for survival and pleasure. Of all the current extensions TV is the one that invokes our number one sense of sight. TV instantly associates to the human sense of sight that is our most powerful and stimulating sense. I dare say humans actually gets stimulated when they see "TV" for it arouses curiosity for input.

I know when I see a domain dot TV I get excited and go quickly to investigate the content.

Great list .... rep on the way.

...!
This is the coming 'thing'!! And the next 4 years will explode with Web Connected and Internet Ready TV sales. We have a bunch of these names, InternetReadyTVs.com, WebConnectedTVs.com, etc., and even WebConnected.tv. Internet TV is going to be 'big'!

Wouldn't have more to do with you being a .tv domain investor, than a 'curiosity stimulated' human, would it??

Great list of "Reasons for TVs Success".

I would add...

22) A .TV, Justin.TV, gets more traffic than any other TV domain name. And is the 108th most popular website overall.

Yes, we are seeing a high tide for TV domains on the Cyber Sea. But a high tide raises all (TV) boats, not just ones christened with a dot.

I am guessing the ongoing sales have contributed big time for this to happen

even blind freddy could see that tv and the net would collide

Thats why we are here

Wow - had never seen Justin.tv before - that's really raised the bar! Will add that to any possible end-user approaches :)

Wow, i just found one more shorter .de ;) ... ah ... one more .cc

This argument should be removed !
There are still enough REASONs !
