I asked my wife yesterday, if it is difficult for her to type "-", she said, it does not matter if the name is with "-" or without, what she does not like are long name to type. As she is not aware of current "short names hype", it gave me another reason to believe in short names.
Back in the 1990's people began saying the dash is worth less because it does not pass the "phone test." Lots of articles were written on the subject and you still see lots of those copied and recopied on the internet today. However, it first appeared when you could easily register something like buybooks.com or mymall.com However, in the early 2000's due to lack of domains people following the old rules had to expand to terms like BuyBooksHere.com and MyBigMall.com. Now it's the late 2000's just about every medium sized keyword combination term is gone.
Old school people will probably register something like mybigworldmallonline.com and buyactionbooksherenow.com just to avoid that dash. Meanwhile, people watching current trends will realize that that the new generation of computer enthusiasts are linked to cell phones where text messaging and the internet are common place. Further, short anything is the rage.
Hundreds of terms the old school "computer geeks" used to shorten their typing are now everyday language for the "cool people." Terms like LOL (laughing out loud), MYOB (mind your own business) are the new lingo. Further, as more endusers see the value of short domains...there value goes up, we all know that 3 letters now go for at least $7,000 +. Further, we are witnessing the same thing with 4 letter .coms. But what about that dash that couldn't pass the "phone test"?
Let's face it, the times are long gone when you could register one word and two word keyphrases for $7. With internet cellphones and possible domain names becoming the next phone number...do people want to type a three or four word domain name ore a 4 character one?
It does not matter if these have a dash. Very few short domains pass the "phone test".
qkry.com is not a word and you have to say Q K R Y dot com
U9s.com is not a word and you have to say U 9 S dot com or someone might type YouNineS.com
cmd.com is worth $12,000+ but you have to say C M D dot com or someone might type SeeMD.com
last one...

Funny, people scratched their head when I sold Yup1 for $105 on eBay. Well, Yup1 was one by a forward thinking buyer in California who could be a Yuppie and wants to put Yup1com on his license plate. However, it was bid up by someone from Yup Denmark whom probably thought Yup was #1. People don't mind numbers any more nor do they mind dashes. The recent sale ofGO-O for $2,500 speaks for itself. Would you rather type U-AS or United American Systematics into your cell phone, or even your desktop?
In closing it's all about SPEED! Faster computers and shorter domains!!!
